Understanding Substance Use & Harm Reduction Training – Wednesday, May 30, 9am-4pm (Ottawa campus)

This training would be useful for any front-line employee interested in learning more about how substance use can impact students and how harm reduction can effectively reduce possible risks.

The training will cover:

  • The continuum from substance use to substance-use disorders
  • Impacts on the brain and neurobiological development
  • Biopsychosocial factors
  • Risk factors and denial/defence systems
  • What harm reduction is and how it can be utilized

Motivational Interviewing Training – Thursday, May 10, 9am-4pm (Ottawa campus)

Employees at the Ottawa and Perth campuses are encouraged to sign up for this training at the Ottawa campus that will offer further learning and understanding of substance use and ways to reach different populations.

This training will:

  • Provide participants with an understanding of specific common drugs of abuse and ways to promote internal motivation to move forward through the stages of change.
  • Review recovery pathways and how to support clients throughout the recovery process and addiction treatment system.
  • Address ways of coping with clients’ feelings of transference and counter-transference (common in clients with addictions).
  • Offer experiential activities, including role play and case studies for working with clients through the stages of change.
