A.L.E.R.T. Categories

The A.L.E.R.T. form asks you to select specific reasons for concern to allow the Student Success Specialist to address the issues when they support the student.

Reasons for concern include the following categories:

  • Brightspace Activity or In-Class Engagement
    The student is showing a pattern of minimal Brightspace activity in a course or courses and/or minimal participation in class activities, especially if the behaviour is different from previous classes for that student, i.e. “I’m not sure what’s happening with Sarah; she used to be very vocal and often contributed to class, and lately she’s quite withdrawn and quiet.”
  • Class Attendance
    The student is showing a pattern of missing classes/labs. Faculty have reached out to the student but have not heard back.
  • English Second Language Challenges
    Faculty observe that the student struggles with writing, comprehending and/or articulating English well enough to be successful in courses.
  • Quality of Work & Comprehension
    The student is not showing a clear understanding of the material either formally (assessments) or informally (class/lab conversation, visual or verbal cues) or is showing a pattern of low grades on assessments.
  • Technology Issues
    The student is experiencing challenges with either Technology Literacy or Technology Deficiency. Technology Literacy: Student struggles to navigate/understand general student-use software such as Brightspace, AC email, A.C.S.I.S., Microsoft programs, etc. Technology Deficiency: Student indicates their laptop was stolen, their internet connectivity causes dropped Zoom meetings/poor attendance, or similar issues.
  • Timely Assessment Completion
    The student is showing a pattern of not submitting/ completing assessments on time or at all.
  • Other notable situations impacting their studies
    Anything that faculty are made aware of or observe that may affect the student’s ability to succeed. These situations could include financial or personal stressors, mental or physical health concerns, additional support at previous schools (e.g. I.E.P.), personal life concerns, etc. The A.L.E.R.T. form also includes these explanations of each reason.
