Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence Receives LEED Platinum Certification

OTTAWA, November 5, 2012. The Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence has officially received LEED® Platinum certification from the Canada Green Building Council.

“The Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence is a model of sustainable development,” says Algonquin College President Kent MacDonald. “The building functions as a living laboratory which supports the learning of our students in a way unlike any other postsecondary institution in Canada. We would like to thank all who assisted in its construction including EllisDon Corporation, Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc., and Edward J Cuhaci and Associates Architects Inc., and I commend our Physical Resources team for their leadership.”

Cody Malloch and Dan Brigham featured on CTV Morning Live

Cody Malloch the WorldSkills 2013 Carpentry competitor and Algonquin Student was featured along with Carpentry professor Dan Brigham on CTV Morning Live this morning to help promote National Tradesman Day. In conjunction with Irwin Tools, Cody and Dan displayed the proper technique to join two pieces of baseboard together and had a discussion about the skilled trades shortage and how Algonquin College is help address this issue. Cody, a Carpentry Apprenticeship student will be competing as part of Team Canada in the upcoming WorldSkills Competition being held in Germany in July 2013. Learn more about WorldSkills and Skills Canada here. We wish Cody good luck at the upcoming competition and for representing Algonquin College so well.

Join the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) in partnership with Algonquin College and the City of Ottawa on October 12-14, 2012 for the CMHC Sustainable Housing Student Design Charrette.

The Challenge:

As part of a cross-disciplinary team of Algonquin College students, you will produce an innovative design concept for a property located in Ottawa. You will be required to balance universal and sustainable design with affordability as well as the needs of residents and the community.

The Reward:

Push your limits with a sustainable design for a family and community.

Network with CMHC researchers and industry experts including the Ottawa Region Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).

Win prizes and gain invaluable experience outside of the classroom.
