FAQs

Q: Would a student be able to work a full-time job while doing this program?

A: This program is full-time study. Students will need to account for hours outside of class to do homework. Students that are able to maintain a flexible work schedule with their employer may be able to work through their studies. Scheduling of the courses is set to be condensed into 3 days, thus further allowing for students to work at their job during regular work hours on the other 2 days.

Q: What interests or abilities should a student have?

A: Students should be interested in technology, project delivery and management of data and information over the lifecycle of an asset. Students should have abilities in communication, use of technology, team collaboration, project management, and in some cases, information technology.

Q: Do students need any special equipment?

A: This is a BYOD (Bring your own device) program. Students are expected to come to class with a laptop that meets Algonquin’s specifications for the program. Software will be loaded on a per-class basis, at no additional cost. In-class lab times will be in front of Algonquin computers in the BIM Lab.

Q: Is there a research project or work term?

A: The last week of each semester is a 5-day “BIM Blitz” practicum course. It is a mock-up of a real-world project, where students will apply their knowledge and skills learned throughout the semester in collaboration with industry practitioners. Students will need to be on the Ottawa campus for full days during that week (8am – 3pm, Monday to Friday).
