Success Stories & Testimonials

After a 25-year career in marketing, I decided to take up a trade. Rather than coast into retirement, I wanted a challenge that I could master over the next 20 years. I chose cabinetmaking and enrolled in the Cabinetmaking and Furniture Technician program at Algonquin College. The program has exceeded my expectations in every way. From hand tools to modern NC and CNC equipment, I developed my woodworking skills under the guidance of highly-experienced instructors. Bench time was well supported by classroom instruction in wood technology, cabinet and furniture design, tools and machines, and even how to set up and run a cabinetmaking business! This program is very well thought out and I would highly recommend it.

The community that this program fosters is invaluable. As someone who had never worked with wood before, I was initially intimidated, but no one ever made me feel out of place. My classmates, professors, and the technicians all contributed to an environment that was welcoming, patient, and encouraging. With their support, I was able to build my skills—and the more I learned, the more invested I became. I feel a genuine sense of care from my professors, as though they are not only focused on my performance in the college, but also about my success in the future. The Cabinetmaking and Furniture Technician program has pushed me, challenged me, and helped turn a passing interest into a real passion for the trade.

The shop is honestly the best part of the week — time flies, and you never want it to end. Each of the four main instructors brings their own strengths, whether it’s creative design, technical precision, industry knowledge, or solid hands-on teaching. The learning environment is supportive, encouraging, and full of opportunities to grow. Even the staff behind the scenes help create a smooth, welcoming space where everyone can focus and succeed. You’re encouraged to ask questions, try things out, and learn from mistakes — it’s all part of the process, and there’s no need to feel embarrassed when something doesn’t go right the first time or the second time.
And if you’re worried about entering a male-dominated field, don’t be — in our class alone, we have seven women, which really adds to the inclusive and balanced vibe. You’re not just building furniture here — you’re building confidence, skill, and a real sense of community.
