How does PHS help me get a head start for postsecondary?

PHS offers more than the required prerequisites in biology, chemistry and math. Through its Success Strategies course, students better understand the learning process and become more successful adult learners. Success Strategies includes a number of highly beneficial workshops such as Learning Styles, Team Building, Memory and Learning and Time Management. The ideas and strategies discussed in these workshops are integrated in our PHS courses and through implementation and ongoing practice, better prepares our students for the challenges of postsecondary. After successfully completing Success Strategies (SSC 5727), students may, depending on the postsecondary program they have selected, be exempted from taking a general elective course.

Can PHS be taken part time?

PHS is a full time program consisting of biology, chemistry, math and Success Strategies. Each student is required to take all four courses unless the student is registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning.

Do I have to attend classes?

Yes. In the absence of extenuating circumstances, students are required to attend 80 percent of classes. Students that are unable to do so may be discontinued from the program.

Will I be expected to purchase textbooks for PHS?

No. Textbooks and modules will be lent to students and distributed on the first day of class. All textbooks and modules must be returned at the end of the PHS session. If students do not do so, their postsecondary application will not be processed by the Registrar’s office. It is the responsibility of the student to cover the cost of replacing lost or damaged textbooks and modules.

Will I receive a grade for each completed course?

Yes. You will receive a grade, recorded on your Algonquin transcript, for each course that is successfully completed.

Do any of the PHS courses count towards the ACE certificate?

Yes. Successfully completed PHS courses count towards the ACE certificate.

Will these courses act as grade 12 prerequisites for postsecondary programs at Algonquin College?

Yes, based on each programs eligibility requirements. In general, PHS courses are also accepted as a grade 12 equivalency at all Ontario Colleges (exceptions apply). Students interested in postsecondary programs outside of Algonquin College will need to provide the respective college with a copy of the course outline and a student interim grade report. It is the responsibility of each student to initiate contact with these colleges and to follow up.

Do any of the PHS courses act as a prerequisite for university programs?

No. PHS courses are not accepted as prerequisites for university.

I am currently working full-time and cannot take time off to attend PHS. What are my options?
