No one should be excluded from sports. But for kids with autism, playing sports isn’t always easy. Sometimes, community programs are not designed to meet the needs of kids with autism. Every day, we serve 500-700 hot meals to our community. We serve breakfast from 8:00am-9:30am and lunch 1:00pm-2:30pm. We are looking for kitchen volunteers to help our staff prepare and serve hot meals! Shifts are available Monday-Friday between 6:00am-4:00pm.
Volunteer Kitchen Assistant Role:
- Help prepare meals for clients and deliveries
- Serve clients breakfast and lunch
- Help clean and tidy the kitchen after preparation
- Clean dishes using the commercial dishwasher

At our Foodbank, we serve over 100 households each day! In some cases, we provide 80-85% of a household’s food. Our foodbank is set up “market style”, clients are able to choose what they do or do not want. We also deliver food to those who are not able to make it to our location. Volunteer shifts are available Monday to Saturday 9:00am-4:00pm.
Volunteer Foodbank Assistant:
- Welcome and serve clients who come into the food bank
- Unpack and sort donated food
- Work as a team to unload food delivery truck on Monday mornings

The Clothing Boutique sells second-hand clothing and household items at economical prices to help the community afford what they need. CAIDP is preparing for its first conference since 2019 and is looking for a volunteer to assist the Board Coordinators stay on track and on top of the schedule in organizing this event.
The theme for the CAIDP Conference 2023 is The Sustainable Development Summit – Equality – Environment – Social Justice
It will be an event held as part of International Development Week Event (February 6 and 10)

Background: Prior to 2015 many in our community worked hard on the consultations and committees that helped define the SDGs. Since 2015 we have been committed to the SDG vision of a better and more sustainable future for all. The UN SDG group recently ranked Canada 21 on its chance to achieve the SDGs by 2030: eight of the 17 SDGs are either standing still or on a downward trend (SDGs 1, 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 16).
In light of the multiple challenges the last few years have thrown our way – pandemics, supply chain problems, war in Ukraine, looming famine, and escalating inflation – CAIDP believes it is time to convene Canada’s development community to reflect on how we can move forward on the SDGs.
Duties: Work directly with CAIDP’s Conference Committee Chair who will lead a team of volunteers to ensure a successful conference including the smooth delivery of all aspects of the events, such as, but not limited to: programming, logistics, communications, registration, and hospitality, including:
Develop a work plan in collaboration with CAIDP’s Conference Committee which identifies list of tasks, timelines and any additional support required
Setting up meetings with volunteers working on programming sessions, fundraising and marketing and managing logistics like meeting software, minutes, etc.
Liaison between the Chair of the Conference Committee and the Association Management Committee tasked with implementation
Supporting the Chair in discussion with Global Affairs Canada and other partners participating in the summit.
Follow up as needed and directed by the Conference Committee Chair with conference keynote speakers and panelists, including accommodation, registration and transportation needs, as well as any necessary content support.

Formerly known as the Ottawa Bachata Festival, the event began as an idea in 2017 and grew into an annual celebration of Bachata in the National Capital Region.
The Capital Bachata Festival is organized by Capital Region Bachata, a non-profit organization that strives to provide hundreds of dancers of all levels opportunities to learn, dance and perform with Latin dance professionals from across Canada and internationally.
The Capital Bachata Festival offers four days of Latin dance workshops, social dancing and performances throughout the National Capital Region!
Though the festival’s emphasis is on Bachata, it also showcases other styles of Latin dance that have been known to influence Bachata over the past few decades. Workshops range from Beginner to Intermediate level and will provide attendees a chance to learn styling, patterns, footwork and tricks & lifts. In the evenings our attendees get the chance to take what they learned out on the dance floor until 3AM, after being inspired by some incredible shows from local, national and international performers!

About Info: The Supervised Access Program (SAP) is a province wide program, set up and funded through the Ministry of the Attorney General. When parents separate, access visits with children may be problematic. Difficulties can arise during visits or exchanges between the custodial and non-custodial parents that may result in unpleasant interactions for those involved. Supervised Access Centers provide a safe, child friendly, neutral setting, for children and non-custodial parents to maintain, rebuild or establish relationships through regular scheduled supervised visits or exchanges. The SAP is essentially a service for children.

· Remain within sight of the child(ren) and visiting parent at all times and close enough to hear their conversation. (Parents involved in the visit understand that they are participating in a supervised visit; volunteer and staff presence should be apparent but not obtrusive.)
· Redirect/intervene when visit guidelines are broken.
· Record detailed observation notes that provide factual information about each visit.
· Work with an interpreter on visits that take place in a language other than French or English.

H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everywhere)
Was started in 1982 by Fred Logan and his friends as part of a group of events, inspired by Terry Fox, whose sole purpose was to give back to the Ottawa Community.
What was a small group of teams has grown into the World’s Largest One Day Volleyball Tournament and has continued to support Ottawa’s local charities.
H.O.P.E., championed by its’ Expand Our Give Committee, as part of the Adopt a Park/Roadway program, is lucky to have adopted Britannia Park, the site of our first ever SummerFest in 1982. Twice a year, a team of volunteers and staff actively keep our shared spaces clean, green, and free of litter and graffiti. H.O.P.E. continues its history of reaching out to, participating with and giving back to our community.
These many successes are made possible because of the support of several committed stakeholders. First, and foremost, H.O.P.E. is a volunteer led and driven organization. It depends on the efforts of an active board of directors, a membership body, and a core planning team of some forty individuals who, in turn, manage close to 700 event-day volunteers at SummerFest. The volunteers are assisted by a small, dedicated staff. H.O.P.E. is also extremely fortunate to count on the generous and continued support of its stellar family of corporate partners as well as the City of Ottawa.

About Info: Welcome to Harmer House! Harmer House is a three-story 60-unit apartment complex designed for seniors aged 60 or over, who are able to live independently. Harmer House offers comfortable living in a safe and secure environment, located in the Ottawa west-end area, Bells Corners.
Our staff provides you with a positive atmosphere that encourages independent healthy living. Harmer House is a community of friends meeting regularly for organized activities, outings, and dining. Residents can be as active as they wish or simply enjoy the privacy of their own units. Harmer House also has an Outreach Program for the seniors in our community.
Outreach Adult Day Program: The Outreach Adult Day Program is a social recreational program for adults living with Dementia, cognitive impairments, and/or at risk for social isolation. The program is designed to optimize an individual’s functional abilities and level of independence, thereby enabling them to remain in their home/community as long as possible.
Our Goal: To encourage seniors to maintain their independence and stimulate mental, physical, and social skills in a dignified manner.
We achieve our goal by providing:
- Stimulating activities in a supportive group setting.
- Balanced exercise programs (both seated and standing).
- Nutritionally balanced hot lunch and snacks prepared in the Harmer House kitchen and served in a warm and inviting dining room.

Fitness and wellness: Harmer house is looking for someone who is interested in teaching and working with seniors to help them stay in shape with such programs as a walking partner, a workout, Zumba classes, or/and Strength and Balance.
Fundraising Department:
- Identify and manage a portfolio of current donors and prospects
- Build strong relationships with individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies
- Solicit donations and sponsorship from individuals or corporate sponsors
- Organize fundraising activities and campaigns with the support of staff and volunteers, including creating budgets and tracking revenue and expenses
Café Volunteer: Our Café is a hub of activity. It is open 5 days a week from 11:30am to 3:30pm and our volunteers are hosts. Responsibilities are:
- Making coffee
- Selling treats, sandwiches, and other food items
- Recording residents’ purchases
- Receiving cash payment from residents
- Chatting with seniors and making everyone feel welcome
- Cleaning the shelves and putting the drinks and food away
- Then, at the end of the shift, cleaning up, turning off the coffee maker and balancing the books
Volunteer Day Program Driver: Harmer House has a day program that enables seniors in the community. The driver will be driving the Harmer House 6-seater van to transport these seniors. They will be tasked to pick up the seniors at their homes, drive them to the Harmer House day program and drive them back to their homes at the end of the day. Responsibilities:
- Coordinate all trips through the day program
- Be punctual and dependable in picking up the client at the scheduled time
- Provide Transportation Coordinator with as much notice as possible when cancelling a trip
- Maintain confidentiality regarding client information
- Immediately report incidences, and accidents or concerns
- Specific Qualifications: Police Security Clearance Check Driver’s Abstract.

About Info: Helping With Furniture provides gently-used furniture and household goods, refurbished bicycles and laptops to people in need in Ottawa. For more than 17 years, HWF has been helping refugees, recent immigrants, and people relocating from shelters, leaving abusive situations, struggling with mental illness or at risk of homelessness. We are entirely run by volunteers.
Helping With Furniture (HWF) is an award-winning registered charity that provides gently-used furniture and household goods, refurbished bicycles and laptops to families and individuals in distress, to help them start new lives in Ottawa.
For more than 17 years, HWF has been helping newcomers to Canada, mainly refugee claimants who seek refuge from conflicts, natural disasters and other difficult circumstances. Reflecting shifts in the Ottawa community, HWF now also assists people fleeing domestic violence, relocating after house fires, struggling with mental illness or at risk of homelessness.
HWF only works with agencies or sponsors and does not accept direct requests from families or individuals.

About Info: At Hopewell Eating Disorder Support Centre, we provide support groups and art therapy programs to those in the National Capital Region and the extended Eastern Ontario Region. The Bridging the Gap mentoring program aims to help support individuals 18 years old and older who are transitioning from eating disorder treatment back to their daily lives or looking for extra support through their recovery process. The mentor-mentee pairing is set for six-month periods.
Role of the Mentor:
- Provide validation and emotional support
- Provide social and recreational experiences
- Be a role model
Responsibilities:
- Plan and spend 2-3 hours bi-weekly with your mentee for a duration of 6 months
- Provide a safe space for your mentee to share and explore who they are, free of judgment
- Maintain consistent communication between you and your mentee during the match
- Respond to communications from Hopewell, including requests for updates
- Honour confidentiality agreement
Qualifications:
- Lived experience of an eating disorder and recovered for a minimum of 3 years
- Live in or around the Ottawa area or have the ability to travel to the region to meet up with Mentee
- Ability to be an active and attentive listener and effectively communicate with others

Italian Week Ottawa is an annual arts and cultural festival that promotes Italian culture in the National Capital Region during June. Self-management support is an increasingly important consideration for people with chronic conditions, especially those with multiple chronic conditions. When one person or one family has a safe, adequate, and affordable place to call home, their lives are changed. But when entire communities and cities like Ottawa provide housing and basic social services to the poor, the country is positively changed.
Multifaith Housing Initiative exists for one purpose, and it’s as simple as our name: we want all people to have safe, continuous affordable housing, and when they do, our job will be done. We want housing to be affordable in Ottawa — for everyone.
Thousands of individuals and families are without permanent homes or adequate temporary living facilities in Ottawa. How do we make a difference in our community? We look beyond city shelters, and into the future. We talk to people to find out how they live and what they need to feel healthy, safe, empowered, and successful. We design solutions based on long-term needs — and long lives. We don’t want to be around forever, but we want affordable housing to become the norm.
Our History
In 2001, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa and other Christian churches came together with Jewish and Muslim communities to take action against the rising problem of homelessness and lack of affordable housing in the city of Ottawa.
The Multifaith Housing Initiative of Ottawa was established as a Canadian nonprofit charitable organization in 2002, which has grown into a coalition of over 70 faith communities including Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindu, Unitarians, Baha’i and other faiths from across the city of Ottawa. These members are dedicated to achieving MHI’s goal to create more affordable housing in Ottawa while promoting tolerance and respect among residents of all faiths.
Currently, MHI owns a total of 179 units, housing between 300 and 400 people, at five different property sites: Blake House, The Haven, Kent House, Somerset Gardens, and Veterans’ House: the Andy Carswell Building.

The vision of MHI is to lead in developing a greater understanding of, and commitment to, the expansion of innovative housing-related solutions within inclusive communities.

Our mission
Swimming With A Mission Ottawa (SWAM) is a not-for profit student initiative founded as a registered chapter of Making Waves Canada in 2009. Our mission is to provide affordable and accessible one-on-one swimming instruction to children with special needs. Why SWAM?
The need for our volunteer-based service is evident. A 2002 study by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention found that drowning is still the second-leading cause of injury-related death in children, despite a significant increase in general swimming proficiency in North America. Significantly, a separate study found that disabled children are a further ten times likelier to suffer from a submersion injury than the general population (Injury Prevention, 2001).
Whereas a large portion of the population has been exposed to water safety education through relatively affordable, group swimming lessons, the format in which these services are provided is not suited to children with special needs. Indeed, participants in our program typically require more personalized supervision and need individually adapted teaching methods to ensure their success.
Moreover, according to the Canadian Participation and Activity Limitations Survey, 26% of children with special needs live in families below the low-income cut-off. Accordingly, many parents of children with special needs are faced with the costly prospect of enrolling their children in private lessons which they cannot afford. For reference, whereas a set of nine group lessons at a local, municipal pool costs $95, a set of nine private lessons at the same municipal pool costs $360… almost four times as much.
Put together, these facts paint a concerning picture: the slice of the population for which water safety instruction seems to be the most relevant is exactly the portion of the population most marginalized by the structure of swimming lessons currently on offer.
Our approach
SWAM builds on the institutional strengths and successes of existing swimming lesson organizations. We are able to be more effective in injury prevention by providing lessons specifically targeted and adapted to those children at highest risk of drowning in our society. We recruit our volunteers from the abundance of university-aged, qualified swimming instructors and work with our community partners to properly train, educate and prepare them for the rigours of working with special-needs children. We rent out pool space once a week, batch lessons together and assign one instructor to each child. By being a solely volunteer based organization and as well as by actively fundraising, we are able to offer private swimming instruction at a rate affordable even by those living under the poverty line.

We are the Ottawa Chapter of a non-profit organization that provides accessible and affordable swimming lessons for children with disabilities. We also used to be called “MakingWaves”.
No lifeguarding or swimming instructor qualifications are necessary as the lessons are held under lifeguard supervision. We do provide our own mandatory training.
The children can be from 2 to 18 years old but the majority of our students are between the ages of 6 and 12.
Lessons are held every Saturday for 8 weeks (excluding Reading Week) starting September 28. Each lesson is 45 minutes. You have the option of teaching either 1 or 2 lessons each week.
The placement requires 3 hours of volunteering/week. The remaining hours to reach minimum requirement for the placement (30 hours) will be made up for with events.

In the summer, Camp Ten Oaks utilizes volunteers to prepare and organize all of the supplies needed for camp and work with camp staff to develop social media posts that help reduce the anxiety of campers who are joining us for the first time.
Camp Ten Oaks program – we run two weeks of sleep away camps for young people of 2SLGBTQ+ identities, families, and communities. While staff receive an honorarium for camp, we recognize that camp staff are truly volunteering their time and energy at camp. Make a Connection program:
Volunteers play a crucial role in the Make a Connection program by providing meaningful social interactions to persons living with dementia, and to enable caregivers to take a break. Visits can be virtual, by telephone, or in-person, while keeping safe and socially distanced.
As a volunteer, you receive training and guidance to prepare for this important role and are matched with a client based on aligning schedule, language, and, where necessary, accessibility or proximity to one another. Visits are typically 20 minutes to 1 hour on a weekly basis, and, if virtual, are on a variety of platforms such as the phone or Zoom, depending on the client’s preference and capabilities.

Youth Diversion helps youth overcome challenges by: Providing prevention, intervention and educational services that divert youth from risk and support their ability to thrive.
OUR VISION
All youth in our community are supported in making choices that contribute to their overall wellbeing, help them reach their potential and expand their leadership capacity.

Volunteer type:
Health / Mental Health; Children / Youth; Sports / Athletics; Academics / Education
Volunteer positions (with corresponding duties and responsibilities):
Opportunities are the following programs:
Mentoring, Rebound, SNAP (School and not academic), Youth Outreach, Youth Justice.
We ask volunteers for a commitment of 3-4 months (Mentoring 6 month)
Benefits:
