Digital technology plays a notable role in these knowledge pursuits, but place-based learning remains vital to many and differences in education and income are a hallmark of people’s learning activities.

Most Americans feel they are lifelong learners, whether that means gathering knowledge for “do it yourself” projects, reading up on a personal interest or improving their job skills. For the most part, these learning activities occur in traditional places – at home, work, conferences or community institutions such as government agencies or libraries. The internet is also an important tool for many adults in the process of lifelong learning.

UNB board member challenges spending priorities, marketing

UNBA member of the University of New Brunswick’s board of governors is going public with his concerns about the school’s budget priorities.

Julian Renaud said the school is not funding its academic programs properly and is wasting millions on a marketing campaign instead.

Renaud said the Why UNB? campaign was pitched to the board as the ideal way to boost enrolment.

Province spends $4M to bring college students to northern Ontario

Students The Ontario provincial government is spending $4 million on a marketing program aiming to draw students from southern Ontario to colleges in the north.

Sault College president Ron Common says the goal of the program, called Study North, is to attract youth who wouldn’t otherwise consider Ontario’s six northern colleges as a primary destination.

SAIT unveils new logo and drops ‘polytechnic’ from name

saitThe Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) recently unveiled its new logo and branding, the product of a year of research that led the school to drop “polytechnic” from its name and devise a colourful emblem.

“More than 4,000 voices united to contribute to SAIT’s new brand,” Carol Rogalski, marketing director at SAIT, said in a news release. “One piece of overwhelming feedback was the understanding that SAIT offers a polytechnic education, but having the word in the name wasn’t necessary. We listened and the new brand reflects that.”

Algonquin Wins Prestigious Advertising Award

2016 ViewbookAlgonquin College was recently declared a Bronze Winner at the 2015 Collegiate Advertising Awards. The College’s winning entry was the 2015 Algonquin College Viewbook.

The annual Viewbook is produced by the College’s Marketing and Recruitment Team.

The Collegiate Advertising Awards honour excellence in marketing and advertising, specifically within the field of higher education. This elite national program is broken into more than 40 categories—from billboard design and direct mail to radio ads and beyond.

Entries are evaluated in relation to similar-sized organizations in their specific groups and categories. A panel of industry experts reviews and judges each entry, scoring based on their creativity, design, production, and overall effectiveness.

A TV ad campaign by Ontario’s colleges emphasizes the leading role that colleges play in preparing students for rewarding careers.

“More than ever, parents and students are looking at post-secondary education to provide students with the professional qualifications and skills that lead to successful careers,” said Linda Franklin, the president and CEO of Colleges Ontario. “It’s essential that we raise awareness of how college education opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities.”
