Student-Led Tax Clinic Earns National Recognition for Algonquin College

Algonquin College has received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Government of Canada in recognition of its participation in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). While the honour celebrates the College’s community impact, it also highlights the value of hands-on, work-integrated learning opportunities that prepare students for professional success.

The certificate, signed by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, and the Honourable Wayne Long, Secretary of State (Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions), recognizes organizations that help Canadians access free tax preparation services through the CVITP.

Accompanying the award was a message of thanks:

“Whether you have been part of the CVITP for many years or are new to hosting free tax clinics, your contribution has made a significant difference in the lives of many Canadians.”

For students in the Business- Accounting and Business Administration – Accounting programs, the College’s third annual student-led tax clinic provided an opportunity to move beyond the classroom and apply their knowledge in a real-world setting.

Over the course of the week-long clinic, students took on the responsibilities of planning and delivering tax services for members of the Algonquin College community. Working directly with clients, they gained practical experience in tax preparation, professional communication, client service, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making, skills that are essential in the financial services and accounting professions.

The impact was significant. Students completed 213 tax returns, helping to return more than $328,000 in refunds and benefits to members of the College community. In doing so, they not only strengthened their technical expertise but also developed the confidence and professional experience that comes from serving real clients and addressing real financial needs.

This initiative exemplifies the power of work-integrated learning, allowing students to build career-ready skills while making a meaningful contribution to their community. By combining academic knowledge with hands-on experience, the tax clinic creates a learning environment that benefits both students and those they serve.

A special thank you goes to Professor Shawn Sutton, MBA, CPA, CA, ICD.D, whose leadership and mentorship helped guide students throughout the initiative and ensured its continued success.

The recognition from the Government of Canada reflects more than the success of a tax clinic. It celebrates the impact of experiential learning and the dedication of students who are developing their professional skills while making a tangible difference in the lives of others.
