What are the admission requirements?
Completion of an accredited university degree or college diploma. Applicants with substantial completion of a degree/diploma will be assessed individually and may be required to take additional courses. Applicants with a degree/diploma from outside of Canada will be required to complete an English test.
Who should apply?
Individuals interested in broadening their career development as a paralegal and a law clerk in Canada and worldwide. Those awaiting acceptance into law school will benefit from learning a wide range of legal topics and processes in this one-year intensive program.
How is the program structured?
This intensive full-time program is delivered over 42 weeks, starting in September and finishing in August of the following year.
What topics are covered?
The curriculum covers a broad range of legal topics and processes. Students learn about real estate practices, engaging in legal research, maintaining corporate documents and filings, drafting legal and court documents and correspondence, interviewing clients and witnesses, preparing briefs for various types of hearings. Students also learn to organize and manage a variety of responsibilities, pay attention to detail, work under pressure and perform general office procedures.
The descriptions of legal skills, responsibilities, and settings indicate the abilities and environment in which the graduate may generally work and are not intended to imply that the law clerk is practicing law.
Is there a work placement?
In their final semester, students who meet established criteria have the opportunity to participate in an optional field placement.
Will I need to purchase a computer or specialized software for this program?
This is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program. You will be required to have a mobile computing device meeting specifications outlined by your program here: https://www.algonquincollege.com/byod/programs/better/ . Note: Students should have a PC Windows Laptop computer to best succeed in the Law Clerk programs. Mac computers are not supported in the Law Clerk programs as some software used in this program will not run effectively (even when running via Parallels on Mac). Students will be supplied with the requisite software once registered in the program.
