In September 2008, I began the 2-year Business Marketing program at Algonquin College and on that first day of school my career training began. With the help of the many great teachers that Algonquin College has on their staff, who genuinely take a personal interest in your future, I gained the skills and attributes that I would later utilize to start my career in Marketing.

In my last semester, I had the privilege to work on an Integrated Marketing Campaign for Corel Corporation. This is something only a school as prominent as Algonquin College can offer their students. Once I graduated, I not only knew the “how” of Marketing but also had a hands-on experience like no other placing me in the top of my field. As a result of this, I started my career 3 days after writing my last exam as a Marketing Manager for an Ottawa electrical company.

Due to the education and experience that I received, in not only the Marketing but Sales field, I was able to secure the 2010 CPSA Sales Excellence Award, a prestigious award recognizing my academic achievements, leadership, knowledge, skills and attitude that I was able to develop as a result of the high level of education that I received through Algonquin College.

Algonquin College was the first educational institute where I actually enjoyed attending – and participating. The projects were challenging, but the staff helped me through every step of the way. They created a comfortable environment with a support system that made me want to apply myself and succeed – from my first day at the college until even now, 3 years after graduating. The best part about the staff, in my opinion, was hearing about their years of experience in their field; they were able to provide real life experiences and examples in the classroom. The Business Marketing Program also provided different learning opportunities outside of the classroom. I participated in Marketing Competitions that allowed me to network and learn from other marketing students across Ontario and Quebec. I heard from and networked with various guest speakers that came to the college. I got to meet with different Ottawa companies, visit their facilities and sit in real meetings when developing class projects. I even got to do mock interviews with real recruiters just before graduating. I strongly believe that I wouldn’t be where I am today if I had not considered attending Algonquin College. I have recommended the program countless times to friends who are also now in related fields, and I will continue to do so.

I was fortunate enough to have gained a number of years of work experience before joining the 2 year Business Marketing program at Algonquin. However, after the first semester I realized I was lacking some serious fundamental knowledge. Here is a list of the most practical things I learned in the program. These are things I currently use at work daily and have without a doubt made me more successful: Effective communication methods, how to break down a high level task into manageable components, comfort with numbers and spreadsheets, how to build and conduct an effective presentation/meeting, and the importance of networking. The professors were kind and always took the time to provide extra guidance when asked. I would highly recommend this program to anyone wanting to pursue a career in marketing.

The Business Marketing program at Algonquin has a great roster of professors that taught me comprehensively how to succeed in marketing. The diversity of subjects covers all aspects of marketing from both a theoretical and practical perspective. My final project, creating a marketing plan for the Algonquin College Student Support Services, was one of the most rewarding educational experiences of my life, and served as an application of the skills I developed throughout the program. The hands-on learning and projects prepared me for my career in marketing, which I secured within one month of graduation. I had a great time in this program, and it has given me the skills to excel at my work.

In the Business Marketing Program at Algonquin College, I was given the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and to be mentored by professionals representing the vast marketing business sector. Today’s global business environment demands a competitive and adaptable business professional. During level four, I was engaged in real-world critical thinking situations through a comprehensive marketing plan project with Corel Co. This venture prepared me for the realities of the marketplace and became an instrumental part of my passion for marketing. Additionally, within the program, I worked in several groups with a variety of skill sets. I am truly grateful for the cultural diversity, group dynamic insights, different strengths and how to utilize them for the collective success of each project.

During my tenure at Algonquin College I was faced with health issues that made the completion of my studies challenging at times. I believe the triumph of this obstacle was in part due to the “committed, hard working and expert faculty that advocated tirelessly in support of my success.” Their examples of passion and steadfast encouragement created a legacy for me to follow in both my personal and work life that I will endeavor to demonstrate with the same zeal and enthusiasm.
