First Moon, First People: Algonquin Song Lesson & Drumming Circle

First Moon, First People Indigenous Culture Celebration: In collaboration with the Circle of Turtle Lodge, we have a number of activities and initiatives scheduled for the month of January to celebrate Indigenous Culture and to explore the Truth and Reconciliation of Canada Calls to Action. Join in and learn.

Join Trevor Pearce, Algonquin College graduate and Drum Keeper for an interactive workshop to learn some traditional Algonquin songs and participate in a drumming circle.
If you have your own drum, or a shaker or a pot and spoon, please bring it to the Zoom session. This session is open to all students and employees.
No experience necessary.
These activities are part of the First Moon, First Person Celebration in partnership with the Circle of Turtle Lodge.
These sessions speak to the following Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action:
14. We call upon the federal government to enact an Aboriginal Languages Act that incorporates the following principles:
i. Aboriginal languages are a fundamental and valued element of Canadian culture and society, and there is an urgency to preserve them.
iv. The preservation, revitalization, and strengthening of Aboriginal languages and cultures are best managed by Aboriginal people and communities.
63. We call upon the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada to maintain an annual commitment to Aboriginal education issues, including:
iii. Building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect
