What’s a Polytechnic?
Whether you’re considering your options for after high school, thinking of your next career move, or switching gears entirely, there are plenty of options. Universities, colleges, institutes and polytechnics all offer quality education with varying approaches. If you’re looking for something more hands-on and career-focused, a polytechnic, like Algonquin College, could be a great fit.
What is a polytechnic?
Great question. A polytechnic is a post-secondary school that focuses on highly technical, hands-on, industry-based learning. This means that students learn by doing and are taught by real industry professionals. Unlike universities, polytechnics focus on applied learning that evolves with industry trends. Perfect for makers, doers, and future leaders, polytechnics turn hands-on learning into real-world success.
Theory and practical experience
Speaking of university, did you know you could earn a degree at AC? It’s true! Polytechnics typically offer similar credentials to universities, including Bachelor’s and honours degrees, job-specific diplomas, graduate certificates, and specializations.
That’s why Algonquin College offers a wide variety of programs. If you learn more easily through an interactive approach, a polytechnic could be the way to go! During the course of your program, you’ll be hard at work, learning with both theory and practical experience.
Put your learning to work
And we do mean work! Algonquin College is proud to offer tons of work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities. WIL is a form of practical education that combines academic studies with lived experiences in a workplace or practice setting.
Through co-op opportunities, applied research, field and clinical placements, apprenticeships, and real client interactions, this hands-on approach provides learners with the skills they need to succeed. Students will meet working professionals and gain in-depth knowledge of industry-standard tools and software. They’ll be ready to take the workforce by storm before they even graduate.
Apply that research
That’s right, AC prepares you for the future you want by embedding applied research practices into all our programs. Students are encouraged to gain insight through trial and error, experimentation, discussions, and more. This type of research is centred around finding practical solutions to existing problems.
In programs that feature applied research projects, students can work on developments in their field as Applied Research Assistants. This means supporting staff with administrative and project documentation, conducting research tasks for the Principal Investigator, and so much more. There’s never a dull moment as an Applied Research Assistant (and it looks great on your CV)!
Get your hands dirty
