Power Outages

Power outages occur with regular frequency without specific warning and can last for a very short period or an extended period of time. The power outage itself does not create imminently dangerous conditions that are significant, however, the source and duration of an outage can have serous effects on the operation of the College. Power outages may be caused by an event on campus, within the College power distribution system, or may be caused within the broader community due to an event that is entirely out of College control.

The College has the capacity to provide emergency power for critical systems, including limited emergency lighting. At the outset of a power outage, emergency personnel and facilities staff work very quickly to determine a cause and an anticipated duration. The College gathers information to inform decision-making regarding College operations. Typically, the College community will be advised of the circumstances and asked to wait until further direction, based on available information, can be provided.

In a power outage you should:

  • Stay where you are, unless you feel unsafe
  • If moving from one location to another, use available lighting sources such as flashlights or cell phone lights to move as safely as possible
  • Move to a better-lighted area with emergency lighting or other artificial or natural light sources
  • Avoid isolated and under-lighted areas
  • Await further direction through emergency communications and available social / public media sources
