Faculty & Staff: Industry & Community-Based Projects FAQ
What are Industry and Community-Based Projects?
Industry and Community-Based Projects (ICPs) are small-scale, one or two academic term projects conducted as part of a class in which the students are earning academic credit required for graduation. When ICPs include a client or industry partner, the partner costs should be minimal and largely restricted to material and consumable costs. Longer duration projects (i.e 1 year or more), projects that are not directly tied to course requirements, or projects with external funding requirements (NSERC, SSHRC) are not considered ICPs and should be conducted through the Applied Research Office.
With in-class projects now moved from Applied Research to Experiential Learning & Entrepreneurship, what operational changes can faculty expect?
We are conducting a review of the existing processes to better understand the requirements or supports faculty and staff are seeking. Please contact Innovation & Entrepreneurship with any of your questions or needs.
Until the review is completed, we will maintain all procedures and operations previously conducted by Applied Research with the exception of managing a college-wide project showcase and coordinating procurement.
How can my students showcase their work?
While there is no longer a College-wide project showcase, your chair may choose to support a showcase for your department. We have prepared a guidebook to help with running a showcase. You can find it here:
Where can I find someone to help me guide my students in presenting at a showcase?
I&E can provide guest presentations on both trade show and pitch-style presentations. Contact I&E to book a guest presentation.
Is there any funding available for projects?
Innovation & Entrepreneurship does not provide funding for class projects.
My students need to create a physical prototype for their projects. Where can they do that?
If your program does not have a dedicated prototyping lab, the MakerSpace can assist with the production of prototypes. To discuss how we might help, please contact Innovation & Entrepreneurship.
Note: Timelines vary depending on course and project complexity, so we recommend reaching out prior to the start of term or within the first week to ensure that we can meet your students’ needs.
Is there any support available for procurement?
Unfortunately, I&E cannot facilitate the purchase of materials and supplies for your project course. We can, however, make material and supplier recommendations for many types of projects. If you would like to consult with someone regarding procurement, please contact I&E.
I want to do something new and different with my project course. Who can help me with this?
I&E is happy to support faculty members looking to create new experiential learning opportunities for their students. Our capacity is limited and it can take time to develop and implement a new project so we recommend connecting with I&E as early as possible. Please contact I&E to book a consultation.
Is there a space that my students can use to work on their projects outside of class time?
Yes. Your students can book time to work in our facilities from 10-4 Monday through Thursday.
Is there storage space available?
I&E has limited locker space available for students working on ICPs. If you would like to discuss storage options, please contact I&E.
