Meet the Faculty
Jay Smith, Professor
Jay Smith is a dynamic environmental sustainability advocate and speaker who has volunteered and mentored within the Climate Reality Project. Since 2011, Jay has worked at Algonquin College as a student success specialist, professor, and coordinator (Environmental Studies). His passion for teaching and lifelong learning are modeled by his example: he expects to complete the Masters of Adult Ed. Program at St. Francis Xavier University in September 2015. He holds a B.A. from Carleton University.
Jay believes in optimism, inspiring by example, and taking risks to change the future. When he’s not at the College, you can find Jay playing with his two young children, enjoying all things athletic, and taking selfies with Al Gore.
Calvin Climie, Professor
Calvin Climie has been teaching math in Algonquin College’s Pre-Business program since 2009. Prior to his teaching career at Algonquin, Calvin taught in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Applying the math skills needed for the design and construction of various contraptions, rigs and character armatures used in stop-motion animation production, as well as the math needed to prepare budgets and grant proposals, Calvin produced his own stop-motion animated film. Funded by the Canada Council and National Film Board, his film Hyperhelion has played internationally in various film festivals. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University in film production and received his teacher training from Queen’s University.
Calvin believes in teaching mathematics as a useful tool to aid in a particular field of study, this is the focus he uses to help his students learn. When he’s not at the College, you can find Calvin walking his door, riding his bike, or working on his next animated film.
Joe McLarty, Professor
Joe McLarty teaches Computer Foundations in the Pre-Business program. He is a proud Algonquin College alumni who graduated from the Graphic Arts program as well as the Records Management program. He has a flare for marketing and web design and has authored six “how-to” guides on electronic waste management.
Joe believes in sharing life lesson stories with students and the occasional bad pun. When he’s not at the College, you can find him breeding and raising reptiles, creating spray paint space art, and recovering gold from old computers.
