The Academic Pathway for Movement from Ontario College Diploma in Practical Nursing to BScN program is for Registered Practical Nurses who want to continue their studies towards a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This College-Approved Certificate program is the bridge you need to enter into the collaborative BScN program with the University of Ottawa.

This one-term program is for those who are lifelong learners, dedicated to the nursing profession, with strong communication skills. You complete a program of study leading to the opportunity to demonstrate your eligibility for course equivalencies in the BScN program.

This program culminates with the submission of a portfolio for review and participation in an interview. If you successfully complete all portions of the program, you then receive a certificate that, in addition to other required pre-requisites, allows you to enter the bridging courses at the University of Ottawa.

Courses

Programs at Algonquin College are delivered using a variety of instruction modes. Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode which combines classroom sessions with virtual learning activities. Upon registration, each full-time student is provided an Algonquin email account which is used to communicate important information about program or course events.

Admissions Requirements

All applicants must satisfy both College Eligibility and Program Eligibility requirements.

Applicants must attend a mandatory information session prior to application. Deadline to apply is Oct. 1. Application documents will be sent by the Program Coordinator following attendance at a mandatory information session.

Program Eligibility

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including ENG4U (65% minimum), SBI4U (65% minimum), SCH4U (65% minimum) and MCF3M (65% minimum)(or one 4U mathematics) or equivalent.
  • Mature student status (19 years of age or older without a high school diploma) must have ENG4U (65% minimum), SBI4U (65% minimum), SCH4U (65% minimum) and MCF3M (65% minimum) (or one 4U mathematics) or equivalent.
  • Graduates from an Ontario Practical Nurse Diploma Program (or equivalent) with an average of 75%. Admissibility is determined by the University of Ottawa.
  • Proof of English proficiency (if applicable).
  • Worked as a RPN at full scope of practice, for a minimum of one year - defined as 900 hours of practice.
  • Current registration as a Practical Nurse with no practice restrictions by the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Program Resources

All applicants must attend an information session within 6 months prior to the application deadline, meet the program eligibility requirements and submit the following:

  • a completed program application form.
  • an official transcript from PN Ontario College Diploma program, or equivalent
  • official transcripts from all Canadian and international post-secondary education: SBI4U- 65% minimum grade; SCH4U - 65% minimum grade; MCF3M or any 4U math - 65% minimum grade.
  • transcripts to provide evidence of high school pre-requisite completion
  • proof of current registration as a RPN (in Ontario).
  • proof of employment status as a Diploma RPN.
  • proof of 900 hours of practice at the RPN scope of practice; and
  • admission essay (personal statement) outlining how the applicant has demonstrated full scope of practice as per College of Nurses of Ontario-Entry to Practice Competencies for Registered Practical Nurses.

Applications for Winter term admission received by October 1st will be given equal consideration. Applications received after October 1st will be processed on a first-come first-served basis as long as places are available.

    Graduates of the Algonquin College pre-nursing program are given equivalence to all three pre-requisites provided they achieve the minimum averages (as noted above).
