Description:

Looking to have a unique experience and support an admirable charity at the same time? Come join us on Thursday, March 30, at Restaurant International for an immersive culinary experience. By removing one of the five senses, sight, guests will hone in on their other senses, heightening textures, flavours, and aromas. Upon arrival, guests will enjoy a cocktail hour with delicious passed canapes, tasty drinks and adorable puppies to play with. Guests will then be provided with blindfolds and guided through a dimly lit venue. The blindfolded plated dinner service will occur with engaging menu offerings and finish with a delicious dessert bar. Our event will educate others on the crucial role guidance plays when one of our primary senses is removed. It helps raise awareness for individuals whose independence and mobility are affected by their vision impairment. Our immersive experience will shed light on the percentage of our population that does not always get to stand in the spotlight in a fun and light-hearted way. We hope that guests who attend our event walk away having a greater appreciation for something most of us take for granted, sight.

Aloha Akua Charity Event

Aloha!

We are a group of fourth-year BHTM students that are hosting Aloha Akua, a non profit event raising funds for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. This semi-formal, glam luau night will be filled with Hawaiian themed activities, food, drinks, and much more. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 5th, 2023, from 5pm to 9pm at Algonquin College’s very own Restaurant International.

Food and Beverage

The dining portion of the evening will consist of a 4 course meal prepared and curated by Algonquin’s culinary students, each dish paired with its own Hawaiian inspired mocktail and beer pairings. The first course of the evening will take place during our cocktail hour and will consist of hors d’oeuvres passed out to our guests. This course will be a donation, courtesy of Gooney’s Ottawa who will be preparing 2 versions of the Venezuelan arepa (gluten free corn mashed dough, stuffed with filling). Our second course will be the appetizer portion which will include 3 choices; vegan arancini, shrimp rangoon, or maki roll. The third course will consist of our mains and will also have 3 options: seared pork tenderloin, miso glazed salmon, or vegan parisian gnocchi. Finally, the last course and the dessert will include 2 options: bread pudding or dark chocolate mousse.

**Complimentary bread will also be available on the night of the event.

**Full menu item descriptions will be included on Eventbrite during your meal selection.

For our beverage pairings, this will include either a beer or mocktail with each course of the meal. The beers will be sourced from local breweries or from Restaurant International’s current selection. The mocktails will be in place to provide a substitute for those who do not drink alcohol, while still giving the impression of sipping a summery cocktail, such as a mimosa or a paloma. Both the beer and mocktail pairings are pre-selected by our bar manager who has created this list to have tropical aromas and a sense of fresh cleanse for the palate.

Entertainment

As for the entertainment of the night, the main act will be composed of a musician playing a traditional Hawaiian instrument during the third course (main) of the dining experience. This will be followed by an interactive activity which will come after dessert, as well as a few other interactive activities: one during the cocktail hour in the beginning of the event, another during the final hour of the evening.

Donations

Our Aloha Akua team has worked very hard to collect numerous donations from various companies throughout Ottawa to ensure that all event attendees have a chance at winning one or more prizes. With that said, we have curated a number of different ways for you to win a prize. Some of these include a raffle, a silent auction, a balloon pop, 3 top-secret “no-entry needed” prizes, and a pre-event 50/50. All of these activities and prizes will be explained further to you by our MC of the night, who will also announce the winners live.

We hope to see you there!

You won’t want to miss out on this incredible glam luau night filled with good food/drink, activities, laughs, and a feeling of selflessness. This is once again being hosted on Wednesday, April 5th, 2023, from 5pm to 9pm, at Algonquin College’s very own Restaurant International.
