From Sept. 15-25, 2026, Algonquin College will host the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada Giant Floor Map in Nawapon, offering learners, faculty and visitors a unique opportunity to explore the rich histories, cultures, languages and lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

Presented by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and Canadian Geographic Education, this impressive interactive map (akìzinàzowin) measures 11 metres by 8 metres (36′ x 26′), transforming the learning experience into a journey you can literally walk across. June 24, 2026 Ottawa, ON — Algonquin College is marking Canada’s National Indigenous History Month by highlighting progress made over the last year in advancing its commitments to Truth and Reconciliation.

Since the release of its 10-Year Report on Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action in June 2025, the College has expanded community partnerships, strengthened Indigenous language revitalization efforts, created new Indigenous spaces on campus, integrated Indigenous ways of knowing into hiring practices, and launched a two-year Indigenous Studies diploma. The College also introduced Nìgàn, a major new initiative designed to guide and accelerate reconciliation-focused work with community partners, and the Indigenous Knowledge, Work, and Entrepreneurship (IKWE) program to support and empower Indigenous students. This National Indigenous History Month, Algonquin College is proud to announce that CAE is the newest partner of the recently rebranded Nìgàn initiative (formerly known as DARE6). Through this collaboration, CAE will financially support student success, strengthen community partnerships, and contribute to ongoing efforts toward Truth and Reconciliation in our region and beyond.

First established in 2020 as DARE6, Nìgàn is a collaboration that brings together Algonquin College and community partners to build meaningful relationships grounded in learning, respect, and shared responsibility. Partners are invited to become part of the college community and experience relationship building, working in circle, and learning about Indigenization and reconciliation. The AC Library offers a wide range of resources to support learning about Métis peoples in Canada. Métis people are one of the three distinct Indigenous Peoples recognized in Canada, alongside First Nations and Inuit. Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus is proud to partner with the Circle of Turtle Lodge in hosting the first Annual Algonquin Elders Conference, taking place June 19-21 as part of National Indigenous Peoples Day weekend. The conference will bring together Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community members, allies and learners for a weekend of teachings, connection and cultural learning.

This year’s conference will focus on the Medicine Wheel, exploring its teachings and significance through presentations, workshops, ceremonies and opportunities for dialogue and reflection. Participants will have the opportunity to learn directly from Elders and Knowledge Keepers while building relationships grounded in respect, understanding and community. Continue reading →
