Study Permit Waiver FAQs
Q. I signed the waiver to start my studies remotely without a valid study permit, what happens next?
Your signed waiver, along with any supporting documents attached to the waiver form are uploaded to your application file and you are officially registered. You will receive information about accessing your timetable and our Student Information System (ACSIS).
Q. I signed the waiver to confirm that I have a valid study permit what happens next?
- If your study permit is approved, and you attached it to the waiver, your file will be updated accordingly and you will be officially registered.
- You can start to make travel and self-isolation plans.
Q. What is the deadline to get my study permit?
- If you are starting level one (1) of a remote Fall 2021 intake (September 2021) program, your deadline is December 20, 2021.
- If you are starting level two (2) of a remote Fall 2021 (September 2021) program, your deadline is November 12, 2021.
Q. I am currently (Spring 2021) moving to level 2 of a remote program in September 2021, The August 27, 2021 deadline is approaching and I have not received a response about my study permit application, what do I do?
If you still have not received a response about your study permit by the deadline, you will have the opportunity to sign the 2nd Semester Study Permit Waiver and Attestation. This will allow you to begin semester 2 while you wait for your study permit.
The deadline to provide your study will then be November 12, 2021. If you do not have your study permit at this point, you will be withdrawn from your program.
You will have the opportunity to resume your program once your study permit is approved by contacting your program coordinator.
Q. My study permit application is denied, what do I do?
- If your study permit is denied, you should let us know right away by emailing a copy of your rejection letter to iec-documents@algonquincollege.com. Based on the rejection letter, we will initiate the withdrawal and refund where applicable.
- Speak with your agent (if you have one) to discuss the reasons you were denied and next steps.
- If you applied without an agent, and wish to appeal the Study Permit decision, Algonquin College advises you to seek the guidance of a certified immigration consultant.
Q. My study permit application is approved, what do I do now?
If your study permit is approved, you should let us know right away by emailing a copy of the approval letter, study permit or passport showing the visa to iec-documents@algonquincollege.com. Once your study permit is approved, you can start to make travel and self-isolation plans.
Q. I started my program but now my study permit is denied, can I defer to the next term?
- Once your study permit is denied, you will not be able to defer. Speak with your agent (if you have one) to discuss the reasons you were denied and next steps.
- If you applied without an agent, and wish to appeal the study permit decision, Algonquin College advises you to seek the guidance of a certified immigration consultant.
Q. I’m worried that my study permit won’t be approved by the deadline, can I just defer now?
You can defer your program prior to the start of your program. If you choose to defer after you start your program and for any reason other than a study permit rejection, you will not receive a full refund. You will be subject to the college’s refund policy.
Q. I am withdrawing before the deadline set in the waiver; will I get a full refund?
If you withdraw after you have started classes but before the deadline, you will not receive a full refund, unless you have received a study permit rejection.
Q. I am withdrawing for a reason other than a study permit rejection; will I get a full refund?
No, you will only receive a refund if you are withdrawing because of a study permit rejection.
Q. I am about to start the second semester of my program, but would like to put my studies on hold because my study permit is still being processed. How do I resume my studies if my study permit is approved after the deadline to start classes?
To resume your studies once you have a valid study permit, contact your program coordinator directly, who will assess if there is space in the program or if it is too late to begin classes for this term, when you may be able to resume studies. You are not required to put in a new application.
Q. My study permit has been denied, but I would like to put my studies on hold and reapply for my study permit instead of withdrawing and getting a refund. How do I resume my studies if my study permit is approved when I reapply?
If you choose to put your studies on hold, you will not receive a refund for the semester completed, however we will keep your grades on file to allow you to resume your studies later. To resume your studies once you have a valid study permit, contact your program coordinator directly, who will assess if there is space in the program. You are not be required to put in a new application.
Q. My study permit was denied but I would like to reapply. Can I start my program anyway?
No, you will not be able to start or continue in your program once your study permit is denied. You can resume your study once you have obtained a valid study permit.
Q. I am withdrawing after the deadline set in the waiver; will I get a full refund?
You will not be able to withdraw after the deadline. If you have not received a study permit approval by the deadline, you will be withdrawn from your program. Refund will be determined by the terms in the waiver you signed.
