Eligibility
To participate in the Seville, Spain short-term study abroad program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- Be a current Algonquin College student enrolled in a full-time program at the time of application and either be enrolled at the time of the program or have returning status for Fall 2026 or be part time if registered with CAL.
- Be in good academic standing, with no academic probation or significant outstanding academic concerns.
- Must not have any outstanding financial encumbrances with Algonquin College.
- Have completed at least one semester of full-time studies at Algonquin College prior to departure.
- Have no significant conduct or behavioural violations on record.
- Hold a valid passport that meets Spanish/Schengen entry requirements for the full travel period and 6 months following.
- Be able to participate in all scheduled program activities, travel dates, and academic components.
- Be willing to live in homestay accommodations and engage respectfully with local hosts and cultural activities.
- Fits their program’s academic plan and does not duplicate completed credits.

- Ottawa → Paris → Seville
Same‑day connections; arrival in Seville on May 20.
Return — June 9, 2026
- Seville → Paris → Ottawa
Morning departure from Seville; arrival in Ottawa the same afternoon.

SPAN 331E CONTEMPORARY SPANISH SOCIETY AND CULTURE
Course Description
What social, political, and cultural phenomena, both national and international, define Spain at the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century? To answer this question, this course aims to analyze, debate, and understand the challenges that Spain faces in the context of a globalized world: its system of government and monarchy, central and peripheral nationalism, cultural and linguistic diversity, the arrival of immigration in search of the European dream, along with other current topics such as the education and healthcare systems, gender issues, policies of historical memory, or the change in the productive model that will determine the effects of climate change on the Iberian Peninsula.

Credit transfer: 6 ECTS (UPO transcript provided transcript) = to one General Education or Breadth Credit at Algonquin College. Upon completion of the course, learners will apply to transfer their course back to Algonquin. More information on this process will be provided to selected students at a later date.
