Michael Rousseau Michael Rousseau, graduate of the Teachers of English as a Second Foreign Language, Class of 2010

As a student in the program “Teachers of English as a Second/Foreign Language” at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, I have been fortunate to have been chosen for a scholarship to teach English in Montenegro. The partnership between Algonquin College and the “Hotel Education Center” in Milocer, Montenegro, is making it possible for Hospitality and Culinary Management students from that country to benefit from a world class education in those industries. Two new programs in “Tourism and Travel” and “Adventure Tourism” will complement courses already offered by HEC and its affiliates.

The climate and natural beauty of the Montenegrin coast as well as the majestic and mountainous interior makes it an ideal tourist destination. Magnificent lakes and other attractions as well as the unforgettable coast will provide visitors to this country with the experience of a lifetime. The proud Montenegrin people are warm and welcoming to visitors from other countries and a great asset to the country and its offerings. A renewed interest in ecologically sound development and a desire and interest in a “Green” environmentally friendly economic growth will benefit the country and its visitors. As Hospitality and Tourism grow and thrive in the region, it becomes increasingly important that the students who will be participants in these industries acquire a proficiency in spoken and written English. English language skills will provide the students with a competitive advantage that cannot be understated. It is to this end that my colleagues and I from Algonquin College as Teachers of English as a Second Language share in the responsibility of providing English instruction to the students, staff and management at HEC.

It has been a great pleasure to me to have been offered an opportunity to play a role in the advancement and goals of HEC and the country of Montenegro. As a Teacher of English as a Second Language, there can be no greater satisfaction than to witness the improvement in English proficiency of those in your charge but much of the credit must go the students and other participants whose eagerness to learn makes the job so much easier and pleasurable to do. I offer my heartfelt thanks to those who invited me and made my stay in this marvellous country such a memorable experience.
