Conversations with CAL

Heather Bailey & Susan Blundon

The purpose of the session is to highlight some recent changes to the Center for Accessible Learning (CAL) and, in general, the accommodation landscape now that we are transitioning to a new reality. Some changes include: the Letter of Accommodation portal; the new Retroactive Accommodation Policy; and the CAL Knowledge Centre for Faculty. This session will be informal and conversational, so bring your questions to interact in an engaging participant-led workshop.

Healing Negative Patterns….for Good!

The experience of feeling chronically preoccupied with past thoughts and hurts, that keep you from experiencing present moment peace and happiness, is all too common in the world. In this workshop, participants will learn a blend of mindfulness techniques designed to heal past upsets, beliefs, and hurts for good, using a novel approach to forgiveness. Led by certified mindfulness instructor Carey Carty (E-RYT 350), this workshop will include practical application opportunities so that participants can begin applying these techniques to their own life circumstances immediately.

Multimodal Delivery at Algonquin

Curious about multimodal delivery as a teaching approach? Wondering about what the college is planning in terms of implementing and supporting multimodal delivery? Participants in this session will explore an overview of the multimodal delivery initiative at the college, including the training and support available, as well as lessons learned from the initiative so far.

Creating Safe Spaces

Sandi Boucher

Designed specifically for Indigenous allies, this session discusses the concept of a “safe space”. What constitutes a safe space”? What does it include? What isn’t part of a safe space? How do you establish and maintain a safe space? This informative, interactive, enlightening, and engaging session will be provided in a safe environment from a trauma-informed perspective.

Through her work, Sandi Boucher supports both sides of Canadian reconciliation by creating safe spaces, not only for Indigenous peoples, but also for non-Indigenous people as well. An Ojibwe woman and proud member of Seine River First Nation, Sandi began her speaking career in 2009 and continues to empower change.

Tragic Event Response Team (TERT) Awareness Session

Communities and schools experience large-scale events, and being prepared is key. Algonquin College has our Tragic Event Response Team (TERT) to help in challenging times. The time has come to incorporate new members to our team and we want you. It doesn’t matter your level of experience or your role at the college; now there is a place for you to contribute in a meaningful way to help out should an event ever arise. Come learn about what we do, some of what we are looking for in members, and consider your role in the team via participation in various scenarios.

Big Picture/Small Picture and Where You Fit in Student Success

This workshop will explore the “big picture” of enrolment trends at Algonquin College, from student demographics to why the admissions funnel has become less predictable in recent years. Algonquin College is a large, complex post-secondary institution, but it is filled with caring people who support learners. The challenge is to harness that positive energy to support all learners so that every Algonquin College employee can contribute to student success. The session will explore best practices that focus on supporting student achievement and meeting enrolment projections. The interactive element will encourage knowledge sharing and suggestions on how all employees can contribute to best practices.

AC Innovation Fund Info Session

Are you interested in applying for funding through the Algonquin College Innovation Fund (ACIF), but have some questions? Join members of the ACIF committee as they give some background on ACIF, confirm eligible expenses and how to apply, showcase previously funded projects, and answer your questions. Time will be given in the second half of the workshop for participants to brainstorm innovative project ideas and seek feedback on them from committee members.

Teaching Using Universal Design Principles as a Strategy

This workshop with the Center for Accessible Learning (CAL) strives to support faculty with strategies to reach all types of learners! This is a practical, hands-on session that will include helpful strategies used to reach different learners through a PowerPoint pedagogical information presentation, some breakout room problem solving, a Q&A session, and some take-home practical tips that are designed to be easily implemented using established instructional techniques.

What’s New, Next, and Best with Web

Join members of the Web Team to learn what new templates and updates have recently been introduced. Also, participants will get a preview of some exciting things coming soon. We will review best practices for WordPress website management, providing our top tips and some takeaway resources. The session will conclude with a Q&A period. This session is for anyone and everyone, but will be especially useful for content managers responsible for updating and maintaining sections of our website.

Understanding the Student Conduct Process

There has been an increase in the number of cases referred through the student conduct process, but many of them are not actually appropriate for this process and could be resolved through alternate methods. This presentation will discuss the differences in cases and explore the student conduct process, providing guidance about how to handle cases that may not meet the threshold of a student conduct case. The session is ideal for service providers, faculty, chairs, and deans.
