Lesson 3 – Design Options for Expression and Communication

There are many ways students can show you what they know. Maybe you have relied on writing as the primary way students demonstrate understanding in your courses. Are there other ways they could communicate their learning?

It is important to create opportunities for students to share their ideas using tools that help them reach their learning goals. This includes text-to-speech software, speech-to-text software, storyboards, videos, and composition tools. Today, this also includes the appropriate use of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Remember, the goal of UDL is to reduce barriers. Supporting access to appropriate learning tools helps us achieve this goal. This guideline reminds us to actively reduce communication barriers so that all students can express their knowledge and demonstrate their skills (CAST, 2024).
