Team Jasper showcases the new Algonquin Times app

Want to be a reporter? There’s an app for that.

A new app that is currently in the works aims to bridge the gap between readers and reporters by allowing users to send tips and article ideas directly to The Algonquin Times editorial staff.

The app is being developed by a project group of second-year students from the mobile application design and development program, and is the product of a full semester of work.

When completed, the goal of the app would be to bring Times journalists and the public closer than ever before and allow users to instantly communicate ideas and tips with the paper’s staff.

College prof recruits Interior Design students’ help to build house of straw and clay

Bobby Ilg, an Ottawa architect and Interior Design instructor at Algonquin College, is building an eco-friendly straw and clay home in the Carlington neighbourhood, and has provided an opportunity for his final year students to experience this healthy and natural way to build.

In addition to working on-site, Interior Design students helped build the wall panels at another location by stuffing them with the straw and clay mixture and then packing the materials with their feet and tamping tools. Each panel weighs about 500 pounds when completed, and is hoisted into position by a crane.

Algonquin teams up with Sci and Tech Museum for video game development camp

Algonquin College is partnering with the Canada Science and Technology Museum to offer a new video game development camp this summer — and Algonquin employees are eligible for a discount.

Participants in this engaging one-week summer camp create their own video game using the same tools as professional game developers. Campers work with Algonquin College game development students to explore game design, storyboard creation, level design, audio, graphics, and animation. Campers also get to learn from individuals in the video game industry — a unique opportunity!
