Class sizes vary by campus. The Ottawa Campus admits approximately 160 students in the first year of the program, while the Pembroke Campus admits approximately 60.
How is the program delivered?

What learning technologies are used in the program?
Both campuses integrate advanced learning technologies throughout the program. Students participate in simulation-based learning using high- and low-fidelity equipment, including programmable mannequins and structured clinical scenarios.
The Ottawa Campus also features an Immersive Experience Lab that uses projection-based technology to simulate realistic clinical environments, allowing students to practice in a safe, controlled setting.
What is the length and structure of the Registered Practical Nurse pathway program?
The pathway program is approximately two years and one semester in length. Students enter at Level 3 and progress through Levels 4 and 5, followed by Levels 6, 7, and 8 as part of the full program sequence. For more program details visit the pathway for Ottawa Campus or for Pembroke Campus.
How are clinical placements organized?
Clinical placements for students at both the Ottawa and Pembroke Campuses are organized using a randomized process to ensure fairness and consistency. Students are invited to submit their placement preferences based on the focus of the semester. Due to a limited number of clinical placements across the region, randomization is used to ensure equitable access for all students.
When do labs and clinical placements begin?
During the first year, students complete foundational courses such as anatomy, physiology, and psychology, which are primarily lecture-based. Lab and clinical courses begin in the second year of the program, starting in the third semester.
Do you need a driver’s license for clinical placements?
A driver’s license is not required. Ottawa Campus students typically use public transportation, including buses and light rail services, to access campus and clinical sites.
Pembroke Campus students have access to on-demand ride-sharing services and are encouraged to carpool when possible. Most placements are within city limits, though some may require travel to Ottawa-area facilities.
Where do clinical placements take place for Pembroke Campus students?
Clinical placements for Pembroke Campus students take place within Pembroke and in surrounding regions. Students may be placed at regional healthcare facilities, including sites shared with Ottawa Campus students. Some placements may occur in Ottawa-area hospitals and specialized clinical settings.
Are weekend or evening commitments required?
Classes are generally scheduled Monday through Friday; however, once clinical courses begin, placements may include evenings or weekends. During the final consolidation or preceptorship placement, students follow the schedule of a practicing nurse, which may include weekends, evenings, or extended shifts.
What does a typical weekly schedule look like?
Students should expect a significant time commitment. For every hour of classroom instruction, students typically spend three to four hours on preparation and independent study. Once clinical placements begin, additional time is required for patient preparation and clinical responsibilities.
Is the program bilingual?
No. The program at both the Ottawa Campus and Pembroke Campus is offered in English only. All coursework and instruction are delivered in English.
Do Ottawa Campus students need to be bilingual to complete hospital clinical placements?
No. Students completing clinical placements through the Ottawa Campus are not required to be bilingual. Clinical placements are conducted in English, and students are not placed at francophone-only clinical sites. While some clinical agencies may be bilingual, students are able to complete their placements in English. Being bilingual can be an advantage in the healthcare profession, but French language proficiency is not a requirement for admission, progression, or completion of the program.
