The Electrical Techniques program is a great choice for students who want to explore the career opportunities that the skilled trades have to offer, get job ready skills or pursue a passion for electrical technology.
What level of apprenticeship training does this certificate offer me?
In keeping with Ministry and the Ontario College of Trades standards, the program will deliver content that meets the requirements for Level 1 in-school Electrician apprenticeship (309A/442A) training
How long does it take to complete this certificate?
This certificate is delivered over two semesters or one year of study.
Is this program delivered in person, hybrid, or remote?
This program is delivered completely in-person at the Pembroke Campus.
Are there any scholarships or funding available for this program?
- Some financial support from the Ministry of Ontario is available to help with travel and accommodations if required.
- The Federal Government offers interest free student loans.
- There are many different scholarships and bursaries available for high school students entering the trades.
How much time will I spend learning in a classroom versus a lab?
Time in labs and classrooms vary per course, but on average two thirds of your time will be spent learning in the classroom and one third will be spent doing hands-on training in the labs.
Do I need to have any specific tools for this program?
All required tools, including laptops for in-class learning portions, are provided to students to use while at the college. The laptops are kept in the classroom.
How can I prepare to write my Certificate of Qualification in Ontario?
Although this course only covers Level 1 of apprenticeship training, the last week of your in-class studies is dedicated to helping you prepare to write your certification.
What kind of pathways exist after this program is successfully completed?
The program provides several pathways into a variety of occupations and other college training programs in the electrical industry including Electrician Apprenticeship and the Electrical Engineering Technician program. Students may then find careers like:
- Construction and Maintenance Electrician (Apprentice)
- Electrician Instrumentation Technician
- Electrical Panel Assembler
- Junior Field Services Technician
- Technical Sales Representative
- Junior Technical Trainer
What are some highlights of this program?
Students will develop basic skills and knowledge in electrical theory and electrical code compliant installation methods. Related instruction in mathematics, prints and installations, safety and trade calculations is included to meet employers’ qualifications.
What are the learning outcomes of this program?
- Assist in the interpretation and preparation of electrical drawings including other related documents and graphics.
- Analyze and solve simple technical problems related to basic electrical systems by applying mathematics and science principles.
- Use and maintain test and instrumentation equipment.
- Assemble basic electrical circuits and equipment to fulfil requirements and specifications under the supervision of a qualified person.
- Assist in the installation and troubleshooting of basic electrical machines and associated control systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
- Assist in testing and troubleshooting electrical and electronic circuits, equipment, and systems by using established procedures under the supervision of a qualified person.
- Assist in the troubleshooting of control systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
- Use computer skills and tools to solve routine electrical related problems.
- Assist in conducting quality assurance procedures under the supervision of a qualified person.
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of records and documentation systems.
- Install and assist in testing telecommunication systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
- Apply health and safety standards and best practices to workplaces.
- Perform tasks in accordance with relevant legislation, policies, procedures, standards, regulations, and ethical principles.
- Apply basic electrical cabling requirements and install and test system grounding for a specified number of applications under the supervision of a qualified person.
