The lab is only part of the journey for our Level 3 Paramedic learners. Now, they’re getting ready to take their skills into the real world through clinical placements!
Over the coming months, learners will gain hands-on experience providing supervised patient care at The Ottawa Hospital, CHEO, and the Labor and Delivery unit. These experiences offer something that can’t be fully recreated in a classroom or lab, real patients and real situations.
Not every patient follows an algorithm, and that’s where clinical judgement, assessment, and adaptability become so important.
This fall, learners will take another exciting step as they begin ambulance clinicals through preceptorship ride-outs, working alongside paramedics in the community.
With real-world experience comes real-world risk. Responses can involve bed bugs, hazardous situations, and infectious diseases, making proper PPE and safety practices essential. Learners recently practiced putting on and safely removing enhanced PPE, working in teams with one person acting as the safety officer. This preparation helps ensure they’re ready to protect themselves while providing care in a variety of situations.
This preparation, along with the PPE they carry, will help keep our learners safe as they take their next steps into the world of paramedicine.
