Meet Kenna, Student, Community and Justice Services

GProfile shot of studentrowing up, I had a negative experience with a teacher who told me I would never be good enough for university. That experience stayed with me for years. I stopped taking academics seriously because I did not believe there was any point in trying if I was going to fail anyway. Choosing to come to college was a huge step out of my comfort zone. I had many doubts about my success rate.

But the Community and Justice Services program changed that. It helped me discover what I am capable of. I found my confidence, especially when I was given the chance to express myself and use my voice in projects and assignments. I learned that I’m passionate about many things, and it was amazing to realize that I can excel academically. I developed a strong work ethic, managed my time well, consistently submitted assignments on time, took initiative in group projects to make sure the work was done, and always gave 100%.

I was not afraid to ask questions or seek clarity when I needed it. I also gained insight from my professors, who guided me with patience, encouragement, and honest conversations when I was struggling. They made me feel safe, understood, and supported, something I will always be grateful for.

Because of this program, I have gained the confidence to apply to university, and I will be going to school for my Honours Bachelor’s degree in the fall, something I never imagined would be possible for me.

This program also pushed me outside of my comfort zone socially. I have met some amazing people, and my goal has always been to help others feel included and welcome. I helped with the 24 Hours of Homelessness event, helped out our grad committee, and did my best to create a space where everyone in the program felt comfortable and encouraged to participate in conversations and activities. In the community, I worked at Shepherds of Good Hope, where I learned more about Ottawa’s vulnerable populations. That experience taught me the importance of empathy, curiosity, and meeting people where they are. These skills became essential during my placement at the Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime. There, I had the opportunity to support clients, help meet their needs, and empower them to succeed in the community.

Overall, this program has helped me discover that I can succeed in school, connect with people, contribute to my community, and grow professionally. Because of the Community and Justice Services program, I now feel more organized, motivated, knowledgeable, and confident in my academic and professional skills, and I am excited to see what else I can accomplish.
