Student Experience

What to Expect

Build real software from your first term to your last. Practical labs, individual programming assignments and team projects become progressively more complex. Co-op provides the opportunity to practise in a professional development environment, and the capstone lets you bring technical and professional skills together in one substantial software product.

Mandatory Co-op — Work as Part of a Professional Team

Complete two consecutive, paid work terms related to software development.

Practise reviewing code, translating user needs into requirements, communicating technical decisions and receiving feedback from a workplace team. Carry lessons learned into the final year.

Your Final-Year Capstone

Over approximately eight months, your team moves through two connected courses.

First, investigate a real-world problem, consult stakeholders, define scope and requirements, evaluate feasibility and create a prototype.

Next, refine and implement the solution, validate it through testing, and deploy it in a real or simulated environment.

Your final deliverables include documentation, guidance for users and a presentation or demonstration suitable for technical and non-technical audiences.

Software and Development Tools

Tools are taught alongside the engineering practices they support.

The following examples illustrate technologies and platforms students may encounter; particular choices and versions are determined by course needs.

Area Examples of tools and skills
Programming and tests Python, Java, Git, Eclipse or similar IDEs, debugging, unit testing and code review
Data and applications SQL, relational and NoSQL databases, cloud storage; web and mobile development frameworks
Systems and networking Linux, command line and shell scripting; TCP/IP, Ethernet and remote services
Distributed software REST and other APIs, microservices, asynchronous communications, performance and reliability
Cloud and delivery AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud; Docker, Kubernetes and CI/CD tools
AI and software quality Machine-learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch; test automation, secure development and threat modelling

Where You Will Learn

Study at Algonquin College’s Ottawa campus in classroom and lab environments equipped to support laptop-based programming work.

Depending on course needs, specialized resources may include the dedicated Networking lab.

Students can also use library collections and learning resources, peer tutoring, study workshops and presentation support available through the College.

People and Support

Faculty bring expertise in fields such as computer science, software engineering, data science, mathematics and engineering.

An industry Program Advisory Committee provides input on the knowledge and skills expected of graduates.

Alongside faculty and academic advising, students can access co-op career services, the Student Learning Centre, the Centre for Accessible Learning, Counselling Services and the Mamidosewin Centre for Indigenous students.

Prepare for a Career in Software

The program encourages students to think beyond writing code: understanding requirements, collaborating across teams, evaluating trade-offs, testing and documenting decisions, and keeping applications reliable over time.

Co-op and the capstone provide opportunities to develop examples of this work and explain them to future employers.
