Frequently asked questions for GIS
What is a related field?
Many fields use GIS skills and technology, so a background in geography or information technology is not required. We are looking for a diploma or degree in a field that typically uses GIS technology. If your background is not an obviously related field, please speak with the program coordinator to understand your fit for the program.
I have no background in programming. Will that be a serious problem?
Absolutely not. The program begins with the fundamentals of computer programming, assuming you have no prior knowledge of programming concepts. However, since there is at least one course each semester that involves programming, previous programming experience or an aptitude for programmatic thinking is definitely an asset.
What are the requirements for co-op? Are co-op positions guaranteed?
Students participating in co-op must meet all eligibility criteria including maintaining the minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 (B- or 70%). Co-op positions are not guaranteed, however, the co-op placement rate in this program is high.
Can you take this program part-time? Is there an online component?
This program only runs in-person and full-time so there are no part-time or online components currently.
Do you only offer a Fall intake?
Yes. Our students begin in the fall term, continue on to the subsequent winter and spring terms, and if they are participating in co-op, attend their co-op placements in the second fall term.
