Learn a range of transferable skills
The Microelectronics Manufacturer Apprenticeship Program at Algonquin College takes place at Abbott Point of Care in Ottawa. Apprentices learn to develop safety skills, and improve overall transferable skills to help employees in the workforce adapt to the rapid changes that occur within the advanced manufacturing industry. The program includes 304 in-school hours, including workplace training, and business-related skills such as communications, teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, and health and safety. The core curriculum includes Math, Science and Statistics training.
In-depth, hands-on learning
Students learns through group activities, simulations, workbooks, and assignments, all with highly relevant content connected to daily operations and real life. Apprentices get an opportunity to tour many manufacturing areas of the company and participate in leading tours in their own departments. Class sizes range from 25 to 45 employees from various areas of the company, providing students the opportunity to learn from one another and gain a better understanding of how their job can affect other parts of the organization.

The Microelectronics Manufacturer program at Abbott Point of Care was showcased in a case study by the Conference Board of Canada for best practices and innovative learning approaches. The organizational effectiveness and learning case studies examine outstanding education and lifelong learning programs and initiatives. The case study addresses the impact of workplace literacy and essential skills on workplace health and safety. Download the case study
