Beading Workshop

Jun 19, 2024 |11am-1pm

Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with a special beading workshop led by Shelina from the Student Health & Wellness Zone! Join us in the AC Hub on June 19 from 11 am to 1 pm to make your own beaded keychain!

Beading has a long artistic and cultural history among First Nations, beginning about 8,000 years ago. Beads were originally made from natural materials like shells, bones, pearls, and stones. Over time and through the fur trade, Europeans brought glass seed beads, which are more common today. The Art of First Nations beadwork is a form of medicine. While you create beadwork, you are intentional with what you are doing and send good energy through the thread and into your project.

Beadwork also positively affects your mental health and can reduce your stress and anxiety as you are mindful while beading. It can also increase your self-esteem as you admire the work you have completed; it allows for a sense of control as you create your designs, colours, and patterns.

Students are invited to attend this event to make their own keychains while learning more about the importance of beading in First Nations cultures and how this art form is important to Indigenous Peoples Day and mental health awareness!

This workshop is open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous Algonquin College students. Registration is required and spots are limited, so be sure to register early!
