Community Project: Community Harvest
Jul 20, 2019 |08:00-12:00
Come volunteer for the Ottawa Food Bank’s Community Harvest Program!
The Community Harvest Program grows and collects nutritious, local produce for clients served by the Ottawa Food Bank’s community food programs. In 2015, the program distributed a total 176,553 lbs of fresh produce. The Community Harvest program grows their produce on eight acres of land in Stittsville, which was donated for their use by Black’s Family Farm.
At this Community Project, volunteers will be helping with the harvest. This volunteer activity requires a high level of mobility, including walking into the fields from the main road, bending, lifting, and carrying in an outdoor setting.
What to Bring:
- Sunhat
- Work gloves (there are extra for those without gloves)
- Closed-toe footwear only – work boots, hiking boots, or rubber boots following rainy weather are highly recommended (sneakers are only appropriate after a dry spell)
- Sunscreen (there will also be a supply on hand)
- Insect repellent (especially on overcast and/or humid days with little wind)
- Water bottle (there will also be a supply of bottled water on hand)
Facilities:
- Market-style tent for shade and chairs for use during breaks
- Porta Potty
- Hand washing stations
- Important note: All volunteers must use hand sanitizer and wash hands thoroughly after using the Porta Potty and before working with crops
Transportation will be provided. Volunteers will meet at the AC Hub (2nd floor, Student Commons) at 8:00am and return to campus at 12:00pm
In the event of heavy rain, the shift will be cancelled (for drizzle or intermittent showers, the Community Project will continue).
