Community Project: Ottawa Food Bank

Oct 18, 2019 |12:45PM-4:30PM

Hunger affects men, women and children, and it can become a barrier to success. The goal at the Ottawa Food Bank is simple: help people get beyond hunger with healthy, accessible, sustainable food for all.

In this Community Project, volunteers will assist in the Ottawa Food Bank donation warehouse. Once the food is received from the community and corporate and food industry partners, it must be sorted into roughly 30 different categories. This process ensures that the Ottawa Food Bank knows exactly what they have on their shelves, and what they may require.

The food sorting section of the Ottawa Food Bank warehouse is completely volunteer-run. The volunteers are trained to look at the condition of the donations as well as the expiry/best before dates to ensure only safe products get into the hands of our neighbours in need. Volunteers will be unpacking, sorting, and boxing donated food in the warehouse.

Volunteers are asked to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe footwear. (Note: cell phone use is not permitted inside the warehouse.)
