National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: Indian Horse Film Screening

Sep 30, 2024 |5:00pm-7:00pm

The Mamidosewin Centre and the Algonquin Students’ Association invite you to a film screening of Indian Horse (2017), an event to raise awareness of Residential Schools on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. An adaptation of Ojibway writer Richard Wagamese’s award-winning novel, this moving and important drama sheds light on the dark history of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools and the indomitable spirit of Indigenous People. Students, employees, and community are invited to gather and reflect on truth and reconciliation. Light refreshments will be provided.

Movie Synopsis: In late 1950s Ontario, eight-year-old Saul Indian Horse is torn from his Ojibway family and committed to one of Canada’s notorious Catholic Residential Schools. Denied the freedom to speak his language or embrace his Indigenous heritage, Saul witnesses all kinds of abuse at the hands of the very people who were entrusted with his care. Despite this, Saul finds comfort and fascination in the unlikeliest of places and favourite Canadian pastimes — hockey. His talent leads him away from the misery of the school to a Northern Ontario native league and eventually the pros. But the ghosts of Saul’s past will always haunt him.

Though the story depicted is fictional, viewers are encouraged to read more about non-fiction accounts of Residential Schools. If you want to learn more, you can visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation website, or go to the Legacy of Hope “Where are the Children” project to view video testimonials.

Trigger warning: This movie discusses Canadian Residential Schools and trauma, including racism, abuse, substance abuse, harms against children, sexual abuse of children, and other topics that may be triggering for those viewing the film. The Student Health and Wellness Zone will be on site to share mental health resources and self-care techniques.

Brought to you by the Mamidosewin Centre in collaboration with the Algonquin Students’ Association.
