National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (December 6)

Dec 06, 2019 |11:00-2:00PM

December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, marks the anniversary of the murders of 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montreal in 1989. They died because they were women.

Algonquin College will be lowering flags to half-mast and hosting a memorial on this date to remember all those affected by gendered violence, so we as a society can strive for a world without violence and oppression.

Schedule

  • 11am: Opening address in Student Commons with Sarah Crawford from Project Lighthouse. Everyone can show their support by taking the pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls.
  • 11:15am: A procession with drummers and a woman in a jingle dress, followed by 14 people carrying photographs of the women who were murdered at l’École Polytechnique de Montreal. The procession will walk through the school while handing out white ribbons and information about violence against women.
  • 11am-2pm: Our “We Are All a Small Piece in Ending Gendered Violence” collaborative art installation will take place in Student Commons, providing an opportunity for students and employees to show their support for ending violence. Complete a piece of the puzzle to contribute to our mural, which will send a powerful, collective anti-violence message.

About Project Lighthouse: Project Lighthouse aims to shine a light on the topic of sexual violence and help students navigate healthy sexual relationships. Through compassion, education, and awareness, this initiative aims to reduce sexual violence at Algonquin College and support survivors of sexual violence.

About White Ribbon Project: White Ribbon is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, and promote gender equity, healthy relationships, and a new vision of masculinity. By wearing the white ribbon, you are taking the pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls.
