Work Stoppage Information: Ottawa Campus Student Support Services

During the work stoppage, Student Support Services at Algonquin College’s Ottawa Campus will remain open and most events and activities will run as planned. However, basic services will be offered on a drop-in basis only. Additionally, some events and activities may be cancelled or postponed until classes resume. Please visit algonquincollege.com/strikeinfo for information about coming onto campus during a work stoppage. See the list below for details about the services, events, and activities available to students during the work stoppage.

Student Success Specialists are also on campus during the work stoppage and can offer guidance and referral to the many services on campus still available to students. Visit the Student Success Specialist website (by School/speciality) for contact information for each Student Success Specialist.


Library – Ottawa Campus

  • During the work stoppage, the Library will be open during normal hours of operation.

Student Learning Centre

  • The Student Learning Centre will remain open for students, however there will be a reduction in the hours of service. Students are encouraged to visit the Student Learning Centre website for hours of availability and to book an appointment.

Peer Tutoring

  • The Peer Tutoring Service will remain open and available for students. Tutors and tutees are encouraged to continue to use Peer Tutoring services during the work stoppage.

Counselling Services – Ottawa Campus

  • During the work stoppage by the members of the Academic Union, Counselling Services will offer only a very limited service to students. As this is a fluid situation, one-to-one appointments and events/groups currently scheduled to be offered by Counselling Services will be cancelled day-by-day, 24 hours in advance. Once the work stoppage comes to an end, a representative from Counselling Services will contact you directly to reschedule an appointment.
  • During the work stoppage, there are a number of high-quality supports that are available to all students, they include the following:
    • Good2Talk: This provincial helpline is designed to provide 24/7 tele-counselling support to Ontario college students. These professional counsellors can help connect students with support services in their community (1-866-925-5454).
    • Connex Ontario: 24/7 support helplines for drugs/alcohol (1-800-565-8603), mental health (1-866-531-2600), and problem gambling (1-888-230-3505).
  • In addition to these provincial services, there are a number of local services, including the following:
    • Ottawa Crisis Line: This 24/7 local mental health crisis line is available 24/7. Counsellors can connect students with Ottawa’s Mobile Mental Health team. 613-722-6914 (1-866-996-0991 outside Ottawa).

Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) – Ottawa Campus

  • During the work stoppage, CAL will remain open to students with limited service.
  • Services and supports that will remain regular and business as usual include:
    • The AT Lab will remain open at regular hours of operation
    • Assistive Technologists will be available to meet with students
    • The CAL Test Services will remain open at regular hours of operation; only tests/exams for courses that have not been suspended will be administered during the work stoppage
    • The Intake and Assessment Advisor will be available to meet with students
  • Services and supports that are limited and/or suspended:
    • Access to and support from a Disability Counsellor will be suspended; should your appointment need to be postponed, you will be notified
    • Access to and support from a Learning Strategist will be suspended; should your appointment need to be postponed, you will be notified
    • Access to bursary funding and purchases for students with disabilities will be limited
    • CAL supports and services for students who are in courses that are continuing will be provided as best as reasonably possible without access to Disability Counsellors or Learning Strategists. Students enrolled in courses that are continuing during the work stoppage and that are seeking CAL supports and services should contact the Welcome Centre at 613-727-4723 ext. 7200 or visit the 3rd floor of the Student Commons (E Building).
  • CAL Test Services
    • The CAL Test Services will remain open at regular hours of operation. However, only those tests/exams for classes that have not been suspended during the work stoppage will be administered. Should a test/exam need to be cancelled due to the work stoppage, you will be notified
  • Transition Support Centre
    • The Transition Support Centre (TSC) “drop-in” space will remain open with reduced hours (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9am to 4pm; closed on Monday and Friday). Access to and support from a Disability Counsellor and/or a Learning Strategist will be suspended.
  • CAL Apprenticeship Services
    • CAL Counsellor and Learning Strategist services specifically located in rooms CA102 and CA204 will not be available during the work stoppage.
    • Apprenticeship students seeking accessibility support are referred to the CAL main office by contacting the Welcome Centre at 613-727-4723 ext. 7200 or visit on the 3rd floor of the Student Commons (E Building).

Employment Support Centre­ – Ottawa Campus

  • During the work stoppage, the Employment Support Centre will be open during normal hours of operation.

Welcome Centre – Ottawa Campus

  • During the work stoppage, the Welcome Centre will be open during normal hours of operation.

Spiritual Centre – Ottawa Campus

  • During the work stoppage, The Spiritual Centre will be open during normal hours of operation.

First Generation Student Services – Ottawa Campus

  • During the work stoppage, The First Gen office will be open during normal hours of operation.

AC Hub – Ottawa Campus

  • The AC Hub and Volunteer Centre services will remain open during the work stoppage.
  • All events and programming will continue as scheduled.
  • AC Hub Reception, Satellite, and Mobile locations will remain open during the work stoppage.
  • Student Navigator Program will remain operational during the work stoppage.

Test Centre – Ottawa Campus

  • During the work stoppage, the Test Centre will remain open during normal hours of operation.
  • All services will continue as scheduled.

Health Services – Ottawa Campus

  • During the work stoppage, Health Services will continue to provide patient care in terms of appointments and treatment by the nurses and physicians.
  • Appointments with the Mental Health Social Worker will not be available during the work stoppage.
