Algonquin College celebrates Nunavut Sivuniksavut Inuit Studies Graduates

Algonquin College was proud to take part in the recent Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS) convocation in Ottawa on May 14, celebrating theNunavut Sivuniksavut graduates attend ceremony in Ottawa accomplishments of 33 graduates from the Inuit Studies and Advanced Inuit Studies certificate programs.

Anita Tenasco, Director of Indigenous Initiatives, represented the College at the ceremony, alongside Tracy Norris, Chair of Academic Access and Indigenous Studies.

Since 1989, Algonquin College has partnered with Nunavut Sivuniksavut to accredit these unique certificate programs. Founded in 1985 to support Inuit participation in the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement process, NS has grown into a nationally recognized, Inuit-led post-secondary program.

Delivered in Ottawa, the program brings together Inuit youth from across Inuit Nunangat for an immersive learning experience grounded in Inuit history, governance, language, and culture. Graduates leave with a strong sense of pride and a commitment to contributing to the future of Nunavut and Inuit communities, supported by Algonquin College credentials that recognize their achievement.

The convocation ceremony was attended by the Deputy Premier of Nunavut, the Honourable George Hickes, along with families who travelled from across the region to celebrate this important milestone.

The event reflects the strength of a longstanding partnership grounded in respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to Indigenous education.
