Experiential learning is at the heart of the Bachelor of Early Learning and Community Development (Honours) program, and this summer’s fourth-year students demonstrated just how powerful those experiences can be.
On September 11, 39 fourth-year students celebrated the completion of their 14-week summer work terms at the annual Work Term Showcase. More than 200 faculty, staff, students, family members, friends, and community partners attended the event to recognize the impact students made through their placements and to celebrate their achievements.
Throughout the summer, students were placed at 23 community partner sites, where they applied their classroom learning in real-world settings. Placements included Community Health Centres, licensed early learning and child care programs, EarlyON Centres, and specialized community organizations.
During the showcase, students shared stories, projects, and experiences from their placements. They described the many ways they contributed, from supporting children and families directly to assisting with research, administration, program planning, and advocacy initiatives. Their presentations demonstrated not only the skills they developed, but also the positive impact they had on the organizations and communities they served.
The event also highlighted the importance of community partnerships in supporting student learning. These placements provide valuable opportunities for students to gain professional experience, explore career pathways, and build meaningful connections within the sector.
A special thank you to the community partners who welcomed our students this summer, including PLEO (Parents’ Lifeline of Eastern Ontario), Andrew Fleck Children’s Services, Odawa Native Friendship Centre, Tungasuvvingat Inuit, our own Early Learning Centre, Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre, and the Canadian Centre for Outdoor Play, among the 23 sites represented.
As students reflected on their experiences, one theme was clear: learning extends far beyond the classroom. The Work Term Showcase was an opportunity to celebrate growth, community impact, and the strong partnerships that make these experiences possible.
Congratulations to all of our fourth-year students on reaching this important milestone. We are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to seeing the positive impact they continue to make in their communities and future careers.
