KNEE REPLACEMENT GROUP EXERCISE CLASS AND HANDWRITING HEROES

Have you had a knee replacement in the last year? Are you looking to get moving, feel stronger, and have a little fun? We have a knee replacement group exercise class at Algonquin College starting soon that may be an option for you!

WHAT IS THE PROGRAM?

The Occupational Therapist Assistant Physiotherapist Assistant program (OTA PTA) at Algonquin College has created a 9-week exercise class focused on improving lower body mobility and overall strength. Under the supervision of an Algonquin instructor, OTA PTA students will deliver a group exercise program which includes range of motion, strength and balance training.

Our goal is that you gain confidence with your mobility and balance in everyday activities. As a member of this program, you will also be helping an Algonquin student reinforce their therapeutic skills as they guide you through the group exercises.

COST

The exercise class is completely free!

WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR?

Participation in the knee replacement exercise class is for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Had knee replacement in the last year
  • Are in good physical condition and do not suffer from any known condition which would prevent or limit their participation
  • Able to commit to a 9-week exercise class on Thursday mornings
  • Consent to actively participating in a group exercise class with OTA PTA students

WHEN AND WHERE?

The program is delivered in person at Algonquin College. It begins in mid-January and is held on Thursday mornings.

PARKING

Campus parking is available for $4 per hour and you must pay when you park. The closest lot to park in will be Lot #1.

If there are no spaces available you can park in the Visitor’s lot where you will take a ticket and pay as you leave, this is however a further walk to your location.

HANDWRITING HEROES (Ages 6-8)

Is your child ready to strengthen their fine motor skills and improve their handwriting? The OTA PTA Program at Algonquin College will be delivering handwriting heroes during the winter 2025 semester. The handwriting program designed to engage children in fun, structured activities that will help them improve their handwriting while building the fine motor skills needed for everyday tasks. We are looking for heroes to apply.

WHAT IS OUR PROGRAM?

This program offers a fun and effective group intervention with one-on-one assistance to improve handwriting and fine motor skills. Handwriting does not have to be boring! The activities are structured to keep kids focused while having fun through creative activities so that kids develop their skills without even realizing they are learning. The occupational therapy handwriting based program is delivered by occupational therapy assistant students, who are supervised by an Algonquin instructor.

COST

The program is completely free!

WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR?

Participation is for children who are starting to develop their handwriting or looking to further develop their skills, who can consent to and can actively participate in group therapy with OTA PTA students. To ensure that your child can fully benefit from the program, they must meet the following criteria:

  • be between the ages of 6-8 years old.
  • Have an interest in engaging with hands-on activities that support fine motor skills and handwriting development.
  • be able to maintain focus for 20-minute time blocks integrated throughout the session
  • be able to commit to the 9-week program on Thursday evenings
