Algonquin College is committed to ensuring the humane care and welfare of animals in accordance with the standards and principles established by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC). These standards and principles are upheld by the Animal Care Committee and apply to all use of animals in teaching and research. The committee also provides oversight of animals used for other College sanctioned activities.
College policy requires that all animal use first be described in a protocol form submitted to the Animal Care Committee for review and approval. This protocol must be approved before:
- Any animal use in teaching or other activity begins
- Any animals are acquired, held, brought on site, or used for any purpose
The ACC may approve protocols for a duration of up to 4 years with a requirement of annual renewal for continuance. A renewal form must be completed and submitted to the ACC each year. After 4 years, a new protocol application must be submitted.
Please note that the use of service animals is covered under policy AC05 Use of Authorized Animals on Campus and is not overseen by the Animal Care Committee.
Licensing and Certification
All applicable Canadian and provincial regulations and standards are actively met and often exceeded. Algonquin College is:
- certified by the Canadian Council on Animal Care
- licensed under the Ontario Animals for Research Act as a teaching facility
The certification and licensing processes involve detailed reviews of animal care and use to ensure that they meet high Canadian and Ontarian standards. Algonquin College actively applies the internationally accepted tenet of the Three Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement) of animal use within the provisions of the fundamental CCAC policy statement for senior administrators responsible for animal care and use programs.
