Authority
The Animal Care Committee reports to the Vice President Academic and has the following responsibilities and authority:
- To ensure that no research or teaching program (including external placements or off-site visits by students) involving animals be commenced without prior written ACC approval
- To ensure that no animals be held for an event, display, breeding purposes, or for eventual use in research or teaching without prior written ACC approval
- To stop any objectionable procedure if it considers that an animal is experiencing unnecessary distress or pain
- To stop immediately any use of animals which deviates from the approved use, any non-approved procedure, or any procedure causing unforeseen pain or distress to animals.
- Have an animal euthanized humanely if pain or distress experienced by the animal cannot be alleviated.
- The Chair of the ACC and the ACC Veterinarian have access to all areas where animals are used on Algonquin premises.
