Policies and Procedures

Review Process
Applications must be received typed and in full to be presented to the committee for review. All new protocols for teaching must first be reviewed for pedagogical merit before they are presented to the ACC. If pedagogical merit is not confirmed, the protocol will not be passed to the ACC for review. All new protocols are therefore due a minimum of 4 – 6 weeks prior to the next ACC meeting to allow adequate time for review.

For more information, please refer to the documents ACC Protocol Review Process 2024 and ACC Pedagogical Merit Review Process 2024.

Duration of Approval and Yearly Renewals
In the event the proposed animal use is to continue beyond one year, the applicant can “renew” ACC approval for each of the next three years using the Protocol Renewal form.

These annual renewals provide the necessary information for compiling statistics for the CCAC Animal Use Data form which must be submitted by the college each year. You will receive a renewal reminder from the ACC prior to your anniversary date each year. Following four years of use, a new Animal Use Protocol (AUP) will be required to be written and submitted for ACC approval.

Annual protocol renewals must be received a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the next ACC meeting.

Protocol Modifications
Changes to animals or procedures:
All changes must be registered with the ACC by using the Protocol Amendment form. The protocol amendment must receive ACC approval prior to acquiring the new animals or undertaking any new procedures.

Changes to personnel:
To be consistent with the CCAC guidelines, all personnel who will be involved in the use of animals must be listed on the corresponding AUP. All subsequent changes (i.e., additions, changes, deletions) to associated personnel must be registered with the ACC by using the Protocol Amendment form.
