Student Experience

Learn advanced civil engineering topics

Students in the Civil Engineering Technology program at Algonquin College focus on advanced topics of civil engineering, including project administration, civil estimating, design of steel structures, and highway and environmental engineering.

In addition, students broaden their skills in other civil engineering sub-disciplines such as statics, structural analysis, hydraulics, GIS, water and waste water technology, and geotechnical materials.

What happens when you drop an egg from the second floor of the ACCE building? Third-year students in the Civil Engineering Technology program participating in the March 23rd 2015 “Egg Drop Competition” found out that it takes a lot of skill, design and sometimes a bit of luck to protect the egg from arriving at its destination scrambled.

This fun contest challenged students and spectators to use their imagination and engineering skills. Contestants were asked to design a mechanism that will protect a raw egg from being broken when dropped from the second floor of the ACCE building onto the main floor of the atrium. Please read the following article written in the March 24, 2015 edition of the Ottawa Citizen about how the students were able to apply what they learned in their program to this egg-citing competition.
