FAQ

What will I learn in the program?
In the Residential A/C Systems Mechanic Apprenticeship program at Algonquin College, students learn the practical aspects of the trade and a sound theoretical knowledge of all aspects of air conditioning systems. Students attend two 8-week levels of 30 hours per week, of in-class sessions. The common core component introduces students to the mechanical cooling cycle and components, electricity, installation procedures, and oxyacetylene welding. In the advanced level, students study psychrometrics, heat loads, controls, and residential air conditioning and air distribution systems. Seventy per cent of class time is spent in theory, while the remaining 30 per cent is spent learning practical, hands-on skills in the College’s shops. Students must be working in the field to enter this program.

Where will I attend classes?
This apprenticeship program is offered in the LEED®Platinum Certified Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE). The Centre offers 190,000 square feet of space that allows for all construction and related design programs to be housed in a single location. This inter-professional space will encourage collaboration between disciplines and offer many integrated and cross-program learning opportunities for students.
