Student Experience

Plenty of career potential

Students in the Sheet Metal Worker program at Algonquin College can look forward to a fulfilling career, full of opportunity. The growth in the construction business and the increasing emphasis on complete environmental control ensure a steady demand for sheet metal workers. Modern buildings require up-to-date heating, cooling and ventilation systems, many of which depend upon air movement to satisfy design conditions. Fans and connected sheet metal duct work are the heart of these systems.

Putting your skills into practice – Algonquin Sheet Metal Apprentice wins the 2012 Ontario Sheet Metal Competition

Congratulations to Christopher Graham who won the Ontario Sheet Metal Competition held September 19th to September 21st at Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood . Chris was selected as a candidate to go to the competition due to his excellent marks and achievements at Algonquin College. View an animated slide show of the Competition here. The event is open to unionized apprentices in their final term of apprenticeship. The contest consists of three parts:

– 3 hour theory exam

– 3 hour pattern drafting exam

– 8 hour shop project made from copper and brass intended to demonstrate mastery of skills required of an apprentice

Bill Roberts ,Frank Murtagh , John Holroyd and Paul Juneau of Algonquin College, helped with Chris’s training through day and night school courses offered at Algonquin College, but as time went along Chris excelled on his own to become an excellent Sheet Metal Worker whom we are all very proud of.

Chris is yet to complete his Advanced level training. This will help him as he prepares to go to the Canadian Sheet Metal competition held next summer in Cape Breton.

Chris lives in the Casselman area and works for Total Air Solutions , a local mechanical company. His participation in this event was sponsored by the Sheet Metal Workers Local # 47 of Ottawa.
