How did you learn about the dual credit program? Who did you complete your application with?

When I met with my guidance counsellor to talk about my courses, we talked about what would be good for my future. I’m going to Algonquin for computer programming. I get a college and high school credit, so I thought, why not? It was nice to experience that. I completed my application with my guidance counsellor.

Did you attend an orientation session? What did you find most helpful about orientation?

I went to orientation. They showed me around the campus. I kind of got lost at one point, but it was helpful. You need a map to know where you’re going!

After finishing the course, do you feel well prepared to move forward?

I hope so. I haven’t done programming in two months so I have to get myself back in shape with that.

Do you think the dual credit was a good fit?

It was. The teacher gave us a different atmosphere. With him, it was relaxing at the college. It felt like a friend with experience telling me more — colleague-to-colleague.

Did the course keep you motivated?

It kept me very interested to keep going on that track.

Did you require any accommodations? Were your needs meet?

No.

How was transportation?

It was long coming from Kanata. Getting to school was easy, though. I was able to make it in time. I had a morning class.

How comfortable were you with the technology aspect of the course?

I think I was well prepared. I took computer programming at high school. It was really easy to understand.

What were the greatest differences between high school and college?

The teacher gave us a different atmosphere. With him, it was relaxing at the college. It felt like a friend with experience telling me more — colleague-to-colleague.

Meeting deadlines: Everything was on time.

If you needed to communicate with your College instructor, what was the best way?

The communication between you and the professor was very good. He was approachable in class. I was able to contact by email if need be.

DC support teachers:

They are very nice people. I worked with Dianne.

Challenges?

My biggest challenge was learning the IEEE programming language. I think I’ve got the hang of it now.

Would you recommend that other students take a dual credit? Why or why not?

Yes.

What do you hope to do once you’ve graduated from High School?

I’m going to Algonquin for computer programming.

Last Say/Best advice

Experience the college life. Not just the courses, but also how other people at college interact. Their mindset is completely different from high school students. It was great to experience that.

Best advice

Get a Presto bus pass. With the course, pay attention in class. That’s all you need to do, pretty much.
