MSC0006: History of Popular Music

Course Description

Music plays a role socially, politically and economically at both international and local levels. The growth and cultural diversity of popular music from the 1900s and how it has impacted our lives is examined. Beginning with its African roots, students trace the development of popular music through the Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Swing, R&B, Country, Rock, Hip Hop and all its hybrids, with an emphasis on inspiration and the evolution of popular music. Students study the style and poetry of music, as well as the impact of technology on recording from the gramophone to the iPod.
