Welcome to Full Spectra

The Full Spectra Centre of Algonquin College’s Office of Applied Research and Innovation

Welcome to the Full Spectra Centre of Algonquin College’s Office of Applied Research and Innovation! This Centre supports applied research in the areas of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) and photonics. We are fortunate to have a strong and vibrant ICT and photonics community in the Ottawa region, something that ensures we continue to be busy! In addition to engaging Algonquin College students on exciting yet challenging research problems, we facilitate student and industry partner connections that help to develop their professional networks.

The Full Spectra Centre is managed by two part-time project managers, and , who tag team to provide the best possible customer service to the students, faculty and industry partners. We have upwards of 15 active ICT and photonics projects this summer and are pleased to be able to provide so many students and recent graduates with the opportunity to practice their trades with industry clients.

The Full Spectra Centre is managed by two part-time project managers, Riccardo Brun del Re and Katherine Richardson, who tag team to provide the best possible customer service to the students, faculty and industry partners. We have upwards of 15 active ICT and photonics projects this summer and are pleased to be able to provide so many students and recent graduates with the opportunity to practice their trades with industry clients.

We’re proud to partner with local companies and would like to feature one photonics project in this blog! Evik Diagnostics Inc. (evik.ca) is an Ottawa based life-sciences start-up focused on R&D of test devices for environmental and medical diagnostic applications and commercialization of an Immunoassay-on-a-Chip (IOC) platform for rapid and highly sensitive detection of clinically significant bacterial and viral antigens (such as antigens that are indicative of HIV infection).

Two photonics students, Hourieh Exir and Simeon Seguin, under the supervision of Prof. Theo Mirtchev, are developing a prototype of a portable chemiluminescence (light) reader-analyzer that will be able to take digital images of the light emitted by reacting chemicals on the IOC platform, analyze them with customized image processing software, and detect the presence of clinically significant antigens in the sample. Evik’s aim is ultimately to commercialize this novel technology.

You can learn more about the work that is being done by ICT and photonics students and professors by attending Applied Research Day 11.1 on August 23rd where students will be displaying their summer applied research projects.
